Edge of Seventeen
Cuts, but Isn't Quite Razor Sharp
Debut director/writer Kelly Fremon Craig offers material somewhat fresh but mostly familiar in a thoroughly 21st century coming of age story. While the film never reaches the poignancy of 2007’s Juno, it has definite shining moments, and does a great job capturing the reality of being a teenager.

Less Magic is More
There's a lot of polish on Fantastic Beasts, it just didn't all get rubbed in or off. The result is a few unclear spots and a gloppy trail leading into an uncertain future of sequels. It's certainly a big-screen event with a Rowling spark, but loses something without the innocence of student stars.

's Impact is More Cerebral Than Emotional
This thinking person’s alien movie is less about creatures from space and more about how humans communicate. Arrival cleverly and unexpectedly takes what you think you know and turns it on its head. It may not touch your heart, but it will provide plenty of material for after-movie conversations.

Heroism, Prayer Prominent in
Hacksaw Ridge
Old-fashioned in the best sense of the word—focusing on duty and patriotism—the film also feels contemporary in its post-Saving Private Ryan approach to war footage. Those who can endure it will find that Hacksaw Ridge pays off handsomely.

Sparkles with Laughs and a Good Lesson
A delightful family fairy tale about two emotionally opposite groups of feuding creatures is surprisingly clever and engaging. In a year filled with mediocre animated offerings, Trolls shines (or sparkles) through the gloom with a fun story and a fresh message about the pursuit of happiness. 4 out of 5.

Doctor Strange
's Worldview is Engaging but Troublesome
This is a tale that's more than merely strange, including astral projection and other practices that are troubling from a Christian perspective. At the same time, Doctor Strange is much more philosophically fascinating and briskly entertaining than other Marvel movies.

The characters keep talking and talking through Ron Howard's latest adaptation of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon novels. Plot twists and a sense of mystery are slow to develop in a story that's constantly explaining what's happening and why.

Neither a pugnacious retelling of the Columbine massacre, nor a cheesy canonization of its main character, I'm Not Ashamed is more the general story of the American Christian high schooler, given urgency, poignancy and inspiration through its setting in a national tragedy.

Can a broken woman go from complete trainwreck to a clear track again? The Girl on the Train wants to say something about 'girls' using metaphors about trains and tunnels, but it's just the turn from Emily Blunt that outstrips the sad lives, graphic content and disappointing mystery on screen.
