Chris Tomlin Reveals the God Moment Behind His Partnership with ‘The Last Supper’ Film

Singer Chris Tomlin didn't have a movie in mind when he sat down to write a song titled No Greater Love a year ago about Christ's sacrifice on the cross. But when Tomlin became executive producer of a movie about that very subject several months later, he realized he had the perfect tune to accompany it.
That film, The Last Supper (PG-13), follows the story of Jesus' last days on earth as seen through the eyes of those who walked with Him. It opens in theaters March 14.
No Greater Love plays during the credits.
"It's crazy. When people watch the movie, they're going to think [that] I just watched the movie and just wrote the song," Tomlin told Crosswalk Headlines. "[But] I did not even know this movie when I wrote the song. It was one of those moments where God was putting it together. It had that little God wink of like, 'I'm doing something here. I'm putting the pieces together' -- and you don't even know it."
Pinnacle Peak (The Case for Christ, God's Not Dead) and Great American Pure Flix are two of the companies behind it.
"This isn't Hollywood," Tomlin said of the filmmaking team. "This is people who really want to share the gospel and share the love of God with people."
Tomlin is best known as a songwriter and worship leader, having written and performed modern worship anthems such as How Great Is Our God and Made to Worship and having won multiple Dove Awards and a Grammy.
He became an executive producer of The Last Supper after watching an early screening and being impressed.
"I was instantly just like, 'This is well done. This is really high level,'" he remembers thinking.
He instantly wanted to be a partner. The filmmakers then asked Tomlin if he had any music that could accompany it.
"I said, 'I haven't played it for anybody, but I have got a little demo, and I can play it for you,' thinking it might work. And I played this demo, and they were like, 'This is exactly the movie,'" he said, smiling.
He describes The Last Supper as a film that is "biblically grounded and biblically accurate" and brings the Bible to life.
So, does this mean Tomlin is venturing into the movie business?
"You're not going to see me starring in any movies, I can tell you that," he said, laughing. "But maybe helping get them out would be something I'd love to do more."
The Last Supper is rated PG-13 for violent content, bloody images, and suicide.
