Wynonna Judd Becomes Emotional As She Sings 'I Can Only Imagine'
- Updated May 04, 2022
Wynonna Judd, an award-winning American country singer, opens up about her life and how she came to faith and reliance on God. At one point in her speech she says, "to the world, I'm one," but "to one, I'm the world." This shows the intimate relationship the Lord offers, and how He deeply knows and loves His children. Wynonna goes on to sing "I Can Only Imagine," written by the Christian band MercyMe. The song talks about the triumphant day when we meet God in Heaven and the overwhelming emotions we will feel in His glory and presence.
According to the Song Story, "The popular worship track didn't start out as a tool to help better connect people to their Creator, though. Instead, it grew out of the difficult questions MercyMe frontman Bart Millard began asking after losing his father to cancer when the future songwriter was just 19. "I kept hearing that cliched phrase, 'your dad's in a better place,'" Millard recalls. Well-intentioned friends would then remind him that if his father could choose to come back to Earth or remain in Heaven, he would certainly choose to stay there. "I heard that so many times after he passed away and for a 19-year-old that doesn't really do it for you."
At the time of this concert, Wynonna shares being touched by this song for similar reasons. She expresses that though she never met her earthly father, she knows there will be a day when she meets her Heavely Father. In light of Wynonna's mother Naomi's recent passing, this song must again carry special mmeaning for her.
Lyrics:
"Will I stand in your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine"
"I can only imagine when that day comes
When I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine when all I would do is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine"
