Bible Hit ‘The Chosen’ Climbs to No. 1 on Prime Video

The Chosen soared to No. 1 on Prime Video among all titles on Monday, marking the second time this year that a biblical series has taken the top spot on the Amazon-owned streaming platform. The series soared to No. 1 just a week after its newest season -- Season 5 -- debuted under a new exclusive streaming deal.

The Chosen ranked ahead of We Were Liars, The Accountant 2, The Better Sister, and Deep Cover to round out Prime Video's Top 5. Other titles in the Top 10 included White Chicks (No. 8), Twisters (No. 9), and The Summer I Turned Pretty (No. 10).

The Bible-based series House of David also landed at No. 1 this year.

Season 5 includes several well-known scenes from Jesus' life, including the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the cleansing of the temple, and the Last Supper

Episodes 1 and 2 debuted on Prime Video on June 15, with Episodes 3-5 following on June 22. The final three episodes of Season 5 will begin streaming June 29.

Prime Video became the exclusive streaming partner of The Chosen this year as part of a deal that gives 5&2 Studios -- the production company behind the series -- additional funding to invest in future seasons, creator and director Dallas Jenkins explained in February. Later this year, the series will land on The Chosen app, where it will be available for free.

Prime Video has 200 million subscribers worldwide.

"Their license fees are going to help us reach a billion [people] much, much faster," Jenkins said.

The license fees, Jenkins said in February, will "supercharge" the series' marketing and translation efforts. Prime Video has a "huge marketing engine that we don't have," he said.

"We can do things like TV ads," Jenkins said. "We can do things like more global outreach. We can also rapidly increase our translations. We can supercharge the number of translations that we can do and faster. We can reach far more languages quicker than we've been doing. And so you're going to see people all over the world get this show in their own language quicker because of Prime Video's help."
