Bible Series ‘House of David’ Greenlit for Season 2 after Drawing 22 Million Viewers

The Bible-based series House of David has officially been greenlit for a second season after amassing 22 million viewers in just over two weeks and receiving praise from fans and critics alike. The first season explores David's rise to the throne and ends with his legendary defeat of Goliath on the battlefield. Prime Video said Tuesday that House of David has been watched in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide, with 22 million viewers in the first 17 days. It climbed to No. 2 on the streaming platform among television series, trailing only the megahit Reacher.

Jon Erwin (I Can Only Imagine, Jesus Revolution) and Jon Gunn (The Unbreakable Boy, The Case for Christ) directed it. The new studio Wonder Project produced it.

"Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn's compelling creative vision has solidified our belief in the series, and we are excited to deliver more of the story to our customers," said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. "We look forward to a continued journey with Wonder Project as we further expand our slate to encompass faith-based series."

Erwin and Gunn released a joint statement saying they are "humbled" by the reaction the series has "earned from the faith audience worldwide."

"Thanks to them and our partners at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Wonder Project will bring more of the Bible and this epic saga to a global audience," Erwin and Gunn said.

Erick Massoto of Collider gave the series high marks, declaring that House of David is a "leap forward that has the potential to burst out of its faith-based bubble."

The series has gained mainstream attention while staying true to its biblical roots. Michael Iskander, who portrays David, said his own Christian faith inspired him to take the role.

"I approached David with reverence for Scripture and reverence for what he means, specifically in Christianity -- I'm a Christian -- but also, I didn't want to make him so much larger than life. I just wanted to make him human and understand that he is a teenager and he's trying to find his place in the world."

Iskander noted that the on-screen David draws strength from Joshua 1:9.

"It's 'be strong and of good courage, do not fear.' Those words are very inspiring to David that allow him to go and face this giant."
