Dallas Jenkins Explains Delay for ‘The Chosen’ Season 6

The director of The Chosen revealed Sunday that the much-anticipated sixth season of the series will not follow the typical release schedule as its predecessors and will be delayed, with no premiere date yet set. Season 4 of The Chosen released in theaters in February 2024, while Season 5 followed in March and April of this year.

But Season 6 -- which will depict the crucifixion of Jesus -- will not release in the first half of next year, as it would have if it followed the pattern of the previous two seasons, said director and creator Dallas Jenkins during a Sunday livestream.

"Everything's just taking longer this season," Jenkins said, citing, for example, Season 6's multiple film locations. "Season 6 is going to take us longer to film than any season we've ever done, by far, so that, of course, then pushes the post-production process [back] as well."

Another reason for the delay, he said, involves the goal of translating Season 6 into other languages.

"That takes a lot of time -- the translation, the dubbing, the subtitling, all of that takes a very long time," he said. "We are trying to release as many … languages at one time as we can."

The crew requested a delay, he said.

"The process of getting these seasons to you at the cadence that we've been doing has been extraordinarily taxing on the team," Jenkins said. "The quality control process has been much faster and tighter than most shows and movies. That's caused a lot of pain, a lot of challenges. … The team that works on this is extraordinarily stretched thin, and so it's just a very, very difficult process. …They've been begging me to give a little bit more of a cushion. And so we're going to definitely be doing that for future seasons."

Jenkins noted that most popular television series have a team of directors. For The Chosen, Jenkins is working solo.

"We are trying to do it as fast as we possibly can," he said. "... We're not owned by some big studio. We don't have a billion dollars at our disposal to make all this work. We're doing this, a lot of thisfrom scratch, and so it just takes time, and it's very difficult. So please be patient with us as we get through that."

Season 6 is currently in production, with night shoots running from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., he said.

The first six episodes of Season 6 may launch the latter part of 2026, with the final episodes releasing at a later date to be determined, Jenkins said. But nothing is definite.

The delay in Season 6 doesn't mean fans will be empty-handed, though. This year, the animated series The Chosen Adventures will launch. Other series, including The Chosen In the Wild with Bear Grylls and live-action series on Joseph and Moses, are in development

Season 7 will be the series' final season. Paras Patel, who portrays Matthew, said the cast members are like a family. The filming of the Last Supper scene in Season 5, he said, sparked a wide range of emotions, including sadness, knowing the journey is nearing its close.

"This is the first season where you know the end is near," he told Crosswalk Headlines, referencing Season 5. "... It's like losing a family member."
