David vs. Goliath Comes to Life in Trailer for Prime Video’s Biblical Series ‘House of David’
Prime Video on Tuesday unveiled the trailer and key art for its biblical drama House of David, highlighting iconic scenes from Scripture including the legendary battle between David and Goliath. House of David is the new series from Wonder Project, an independent studio co-founded by Jesus Revolution director Jon Erwin and former YouTube and Netflix executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten.
It will launch on Prime Video Feb. 27 with three episodes, and thereafter one episode each week.
"I will fight the giant," a young David tells King Saul in the trailer.
Later in the trailer, David expresses confidence: "It's not about the greatness of the giant. It is about the greatness of God."
David runs toward Goliath on the battlefield, stone, and sling in hand.
Michael Iskander, who starred in the Tony Award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo, portrays David. Martyn Ford plays Goliath, and Stephen Lang portrays Samuel the prophet.
Erwin and Jon Gunn (The Case for Christ, Ordinary Angels) co-directed and co-wrote it. Erwin, formerly of Kingdom Story Company, also previously directed I Can Only Imagine, American Underdog, I Still Believe and Woodlawn. He is one of only four directors in movie history who has four films with A+ CinemaScores.
Kingdom Story's Andrew Erwin and Kevin Downes helped produce it.
"House of David tells the story of the ascent of the biblical figure, David, who eventually becomes the most renowned and celebrated king of Israel," an official Prime Video synopsis said. "The series follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. At the direction of God, the prophet Samuel anoints an unlikely, outcast teenager as the new king. As Saul loses his power over his kingdom, David finds himself on a journey to discover and fulfill his destiny, navigating love, loss, and violence in the court of the very man he's destined to replace. As one leader falls, another must rise."
In November, Wonder Project announced work on another project, Flyer, a film about the Wright Brothers. Gunn will direct it.
Erwin previously told Crosswalk Headlines that Wonder Project will "make stories that restore faith in things worth believing in."
"We're living in a very cynical world where it's tough to know what to believe in," Erwin said. "And if you watch a lot of popular shows but also movies, you find yourself in a me-versus-everyone mindset, where it's hard to know what to believe in. And so we [want to create] content that restores faith in things that are worth it. …Christianity is life-changing for me and 2.5 billion people."
