‘House of David’ Proves Power of Biblical Storytelling by Hitting No. 1 on Prime Video

A Bible-based series soared to No. 1 on Prime Video Friday, proving once again that faith-driven content can resonate with mainstream audiences. House of David took the No. 1 spot hours after the much-anticipated finale aired for Season 1, depicting David slaying Goliath in front of a stunned crowd of Israelites and Philistines. House of David now ranks ahead of such popular series as The Bondsman, Wheel of Time and Reacher -- and even in front of the blockbuster Twisters.
House of David co-director Jon Erwin celebrated the news while thanking fans who made the achievement possible.
"This moment proves that people are hungry for Biblical content in their homes and in theaters," Erwin told Crosswalk Headlines. "This is becoming the year of the Bible -- and it's incredible to be a part of it. We are incredibly grateful for everyone that is enjoying the show. Our combined voice is once again undeniable."
Season 1 follows the fall of King Saul and the rise of David from a shepherd boy to a young man willing to put his life on the line to defend Israel's God. It tallied 22 million viewers in its first two weeks, Prime Video said.
A second season has already been greenlit.
Erwin became a household name among fans of inspiring faith-based films thanks to his previous work on I Can Only Imagine and Jesus Revolution. In 2023, he helped launch a new studio, Wonder Project, with a vision to usher in a "new era for values-based films and TV programming." House of David was its first project. He and fellow filmmaker Jon Gunn (The Unbreakable Boy, The Case for Christ) directed it.
Critics have compared it to The Chosen, thanks to its storytelling, cinematic sets, and multi-season structure.
Erwin previously said the series can attract people of faith and non-faith. If it grows in popularity, he said, then "people who would watch something like Game of Thrones would end up watching this series."
"You don't have to know anything about the Bible to understand this hero's journey," Erwin told Crosswalk Headlines. "This is a classic hero's journey."
