‘The Chosen’ Joins Forces with Prime Video in Exclusive Streaming Deal

The company behind The Chosen announced Sunday a partnership with Prime Video that will make it the exclusive third-party streaming home for the Bible-based series and grant it a 90-day exclusivity window after each theatrical release. The partnership will allow Prime Video to stream new episodes of The Chosen for 90 days, exclusively, before they are available for free on the official The Chosen app.

As a result of the deal, the company behind The Chosen is receiving higher licensing fees from Prime Video.

"This is good news," creator and director Dallas Jenkins said before adding, "This is actually extraordinary news."

The partnership, Jenkins said, will allow The Chosen to reach a bigger audience. He announced the partnership during a livestream.

"Their license fees are going to help us reach a billion [people] much, much faster," he said.

The license fees, Jenkins added, will "supercharge" the series' marketing and translation efforts.

"We can do things like TV ads," Jenkins said. "We can do things like more global outreach. We can also increase, rapidly, our translations. We can supercharge the number of translations that we can do and faster. We can reach far more languages quicker than we've been doing. And so you're going to see people all over the world get this show in their own language quicker because of Prime Video's help."

Prime Video has a "huge marketing engine that we don't have," he said.

Prime Video has 200 million subscribers worldwide. Jenkins noted that many of them may not even realize they have access, as it's included as a perk for Amazon Prime members.

"They also want to help us bring the rest of the Bible universe to life," Jenkins said, adding that a planned Joseph miniseries "could end up being an Amazon original. …We can now expand this universe, do more Bible projects, because of our new partnership with Prime Video."

A 90-day exclusivity window, Jenkins said, is a "short window of exclusivity" compared to other entertainment projects.

"They have been so cooperative with us on making sure that that exclusive window is as short as possible," Jenkins said. "Most exclusive streaming windows are a year at least."

Traci Blackwell, senior creative executive at Amazon, spoke during the livestream. Prime Video, she said, is increasing its library for faith audiences. The new streaming series House of David, for example, launches on Prime Video Feb. 27.

She described the faith community as "vastly underserved" in the streaming market. Blackwell herself is a person of faith, calling herself a "bold believer" and a "follower of Christ."

"I'm a huge, massive fan of the show," Blackwell said. "I was obsessed with this show before I came to Amazon."

Season 5 of The Chosen launches in theaters March 27
