‘The Chosen’ Stars Share Why the Series Connects with Audiences Worldwide

The actors who portray Peter, Andrew, and John in The Chosen say the series resonates across ethnic and political divides by offering a universal message of hope while authentically portraying the humanity of its characters. Shahar Isaac, Noah James and George Xanthis are three of the most recognized faces in the Bible-based, Jesus-centric series, which continues its theatrical run Easter weekend with a Season 5 "binge fest" in select theaters where fans can watch all three parts of what has been branded The Chosen: Last Supper.
Worldwide, the series has been viewed by more than 200 million people -- including an eclectic mix of fans such as Whoopi Goldberg, Tucker Carlson, Chris Pratt and Gwen Stefani.
"We're going for the humanity of these human beings. And that is universal, you know?" Isaac, who portrays Simon Peter, told Crosswalk Headlines. "And that is something that anybody can relate to."
The series, he added, depicts the followers of Jesus navigating real-life struggles.
"It's a drama that anybody can enjoy," he said. "... I think it's for anyone, for everyone."
James, who plays the Apostle Andrew, highlighted the diverse personalities among the disciples as a reflection of the show's realistic portrayal of community.
"When you see these scenes of the disciples, and we're all arguing, we have all different points of view," James told Crosswalk Headlines. "I mean, it would be so odd to say, 'Everyone must think the exact same way.'"
It's healthy, James said, to see the disciples with a variety of perspectives.
"We sort of all need that to make the world a better place," he said. "I really do believe that. And so I think people do respond to that authenticity of: How do I really feel about this? And if I were in this position, what would I be doing? And you might align with one disciple or the other."
Xanthis, who portrays the Apostle John, added, "I think everyone that watches the show can see a bit of themselves, not only in the disciples, but in Jesus' message."
Meanwhile, the trio says The Chosen has succeeded in part because of the close-knit, family-like atmosphere on set. The actors have become friends.
"There's an enormous amount of respect from everybody -- kind of attentive to help push and elevate each moment," Isaac said of the on-set work.
"It's pretty incredible."
