God Knows…When I Want Something Better – Part 2

You remember that Jesus made His friends a promise shortly before He returned to heaven. He said, “Don’t feel troubled about My leaving you. I am going to prepare homes for you, and when everything is ready, I will come for you and for all My other people. Then we can be together always” (John 14:1-3).

Years later on the Isle of Patmos, John was able to see these homes in the vision God gave him. He described the city as best he could. “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth. … Then I saw the holy city coming down out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband,” he wrote. “And He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’” The light of the New Jerusalem “was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal … and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones … The twelve gates were twelve pearls … And the street of the city was pure gold… The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it … a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeded from the throne of God” (Revelation 21-22). What a beautiful description of a beautiful city!

Something Better

Heaven is a real place for real people. Interested? We will never run out of time to do the things we enjoy. Yet we will never be bored. Paul quoted Isaiah when he wrote, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Won’t it be great to talk to Paul and even Jesus Himself? And many other loving people from all of Earth’s history.

God’s last invitation in the Bible is found in Revelation 22:17: “Let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.”

If we thirst for something better, if we want to enter through the gates into the holy city and eat from the Tree of Life, we will say Yes to God’s invitation. “Jesus, I choose to be Yours today. Come and live Your life in me.” If Christ is living in us, our minds will be open to pure, loving thoughts. Our hands will do helpful and loving things. The character of Jesus will become our character.
