Diversity Of Voices - Answers for Church Members - September 3
Is there room for a diversity of voices and styles in a church’s music?
Of course! The goal of the musical aspect of worship is to glorify God by praising him for who he is and what he’s done. Different styles of music will highlight different facets of God’s revelation. The same thing goes for songs from different eras in history and nations around the world.
On the other hand, you don’t want a worship service to be so eclectic that it’s jarring or excludes all unity and coherence. But with sound judgment, it is absolutely appropriate for churches to incorporate a rich diversity of voices and styles into the musical component of their corporate worship services. After all, the church is one body composed of many members, all possessing different gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7, 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 . A diversity of musical styles and voices can wonderfully reflect the diversity of the body of Christ.
