Clinging to Him When Life Happens - Beloved Women - January 29, 2020
READ: “But you shall cling to the LORD your God just as you have done to this day.” (Joshua 23:8 ESV)
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT: With childlike wonder my 7-year-old asked, “How did that plant grow all the way up that building?” He was marvelling at English Ivy that completely covered the facade of a building. English Ivy has an amazing ability to cling. Not only do its roots go deep into the ground, it has an additional root system along the vines. These vine roots change shape to better adhere to the surface. The ivy also produces a glue and root hairs that go into cracks and crevices which produces a hold that is difficult to separate.
Today’s verse reminds us to continue clinging to God. An unexpected illness, job change, or disappointment can cause us to loosen our grip. Our steadfastness in abiding in God creates a bond that is not easily penetrated. When we employ the spiritual disciplines of reading God’s word, fasting, prayer, praise, and worship, like the ivy, our roots in Him go deep, fostering an impenetrable bond. So when life happens, storms rage and billows blow, adhere to Him and cling tight.
PRAY: Lord, as the issues of life arise, may I fiercely cling to You. With every prayer I pray, every scripture I read and every word You utter to me, may my roots in You go deeper and deeper so that I am not easily moved. May I be unmovable and unshakable, always abounding in what You’ve called me to do. In Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen.
REFLECT: How can you strengthen your ability to cling to God when the issues of life arise?
