Devoted Like David
Café Menu for Wednesday, December 3, 2014
Today’s Special is: When I Grow Up I Want to be Just Like Him
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Alyssa Woollard
Main Ingredient:
After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.
Acts 13:22NIV
Entrée:
More than anything I want this, to be a woman after God’s own heart. I want to be his. whole. holy. But most days, I am mostly just a hot mess.
I guess that is why I love David. His life was messy too and yet God himself, through the apostle Paul, called him, “a man after my own heart.” There may be hope for me yet.
So what if my hormones have more control over my mental state than I care to admit or maintaining a schedule seems to be the hardest thing I have ever tried to do. I love God, I really do and I can’t help but wonder if God could ever say that about me, too. That I am after his own heart.
David had passion and absolute faith. And even though his passion sometimes led him astray, still he killed Goliath with just a sling and a stone because he trusted God’s strength and not his own.
He loved God, loved His law and meditated on it day and night. He was compelled to write songs of praise to the God he loved. Those songs, the Psalms, are such an encouragement to my heart. No matter how bad things were, David may have begun angry or afraid, his song always ended the same: in trusting heart felt praise.
David was thankful in all circumstances and when his faithfulness failed he was devastated by his sin and God forgave him again and again and again.
Yes, LORD I want a heart like David’s. I want relationship with you more than any earthly thing. When this sinful flesh fails I pray, “God pursue me, restore my faith.” And someday I hope to hear you say, “I have found Alyssa, a woman after my own heart, she did everything I wanted her to.”
Might you want that too?
Take Out:
Pray. Ask God to make you a woman after God’s own heart.
In spite of circumstance, strive to live a passionate life of faith and obedience to God and when you fall short, humble yourself in the sight of the LORD. Give thanks and meditate on his Word.
Dessert:
Precious Holy God, LORD of All, thank you. Thank you for loving us so completely and for allowing us to love and know you too. LORD overwhelm us with a desperate desire to have a heart that chases after you. May we be women who want no earthly thing more than you. LORD give us a holy hunger that only you can fill. Make us pant for living water that we may never thirst again. Be our life. Be our all. Give us a heart like David’s, full of faith and fire. Empower us with your Spirit to be faithful to you unto death. By the same power that raised Jesus from the grave we ask all of this in His Holy Name. Renew us again. Amen and amen.
