Dirt Roads That Draw Us Closer to God

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18 NIV

I looked at the plastic stick again – only one line. My eyes burned and tears flowed down my cheeks. My heart twisted and the knot in my throat threatened to choke me. I was not pregnant. It was over.

My journey to have children did not start off difficult. I conceived my first child easily, had a normal pregnancy, and uncomplicated birth. From there my journey twisted and turned.

After two tubal pregnancies that ruined both my fallopian tubes, my husband and I moved on to in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

The dirt road marked infertility has many options, curves, bumps, and turns. I would never wish this road on anyone, but God used this dirt road to draw me to Him.

It drove me to cry out to Him – much like David did in the Psalms. As I cried out to God, I discovered the truth.

On my broken road, God is near me and saves me (Psalm 34:18).

He collects my tears in a bottle, and writes them down in a book (Psalm 56:8). He hears me when I cry out to Him (Psalm 18:6). God walks the dark path next me (Psalm 23:4) and He will never leave me (Deuteronomy 31:6).

The dust of infertility still blows up from time to time. The pain is real, I cannot have more children and I want more. I do not understand why I cannot have more.

What I do know is I serve a God who uses this painful dust to draw me close to Him, to refine me, and to make me more like Him.

Is God using a dirt road in your life to draw you closer to Him? Consider reading through the book of Psalms and cry out to God the way the psalmists did.

Father God, Dirt roads hurt and questions surround us. Help us to cry out to You and through Your Word, may we know the truth. You are with us and will save us through these difficult times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
