How Low Can You Go? - Encouragement Café - October 11

How Low Can You Go?
 By Jill Beran

And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross.  Philippians 2:8

Growing up, roller skating was our Friday night activity and the limbo was my favorite game.  I always enjoyed the challenge of staying up on my skates while going under the lowering bamboo stick.  Back then the limbo was something I was good at and the phrase, “How low can you go?“ was one I enjoyed.

A while ago our pastor preached through Philippians and I found myself thinking about the old familiar phrase once again.  Only this time thoughts didn’t revolve around a game and the prize is so much more than a candy bar.  Friends, I’m talking about the Humility Limbo!

This isn’t something we should attempt to succeed at once a week, but like Jesus, it must become a way of life.  He is the epitome of humility… one who gave up everything - His wants, plans and desires to do God’s will.  He came from the highest place to die the lowest death.  And because He went low, God raised Him up. (Philippians 2:9)

Humility is an amazing part of Christ’s character and it’s something we as Christians are often commanded, and encouraged, to display.  For instance -

Finally, all of you live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.  1 Peter 3:8 ISV

Do not act out of selfish ambition or conceit, but with humility think of others as being better than yourselves.  Philippians 2:3 ISV

For by the grace given me I say to everyone of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.  Romans 12:3 NIV

Friends, Jesus won the Humility Limbo, but He would love for us to join Him on the medal stand.  So let me ask you, “How low can you go?”

In your words define humility.  As you think about the definition, look at your life and evaluate how well you display it.  And then pray about how you can make yourself go lower.

Remember Christ humbled Himself to the point of death; may you be encouraged to humble yourself to the place that brings God glory.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the example Jesus sets for all of us.  His humility not only saves me, but paints a picture of what I need to do.  Help me lower myself, let go of my plans and live in humility.  You know humble living is hard, but You’ve equipped me to do the work You’ve called me to.  Help me understand humility more and live it better.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen
