Judging Others - Encouragement Café - September 24

Judging Others
 By Judy Fussell

There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?  James 4:12

Don’t we all judge others? We are snubbed or ignored. Someone cuts us off in traffic. Our spouse doesn’t measure up. A friend’s actions or words leave us stunned. A disheveled tattered man stands by the side of the road holding a sign. Someone’s child, maybe yours, misbehaves and makes an ugly scene. Once more you fail to reach that long sought after goal.

Day after day, as time unfolds, we easily make judgments regarding others and even ourselves. Has anyone ever come up and thanked you for your critical condescending attitude or words? When you condemn yourself for mistakes or failures, are you built up or sent quickly to the pit of despair?

God has a remedy for this negative force that is present in our human nature. It is found in His love. When we accept Christ as Savior, our relationship to God is restored. Our human fallen state, however, is not immediately cured. As Christians, we have the power of the Holy Spirit living within, but our old nature remains.

We must continually “feed” upon God’s Word, digest it, and let its power fill our minds and hearts so we are able to see with God’s perspective. His Spirit then whispers truth to ours and we are free to love God, ourselves, and others.

Next time we are tempted to look with self-righteous judgment at a situation, let’s ask God for His heart, His eyes, and His love. Remember that Christ loved us first. (Romans 5:8) Love covers over all wrongs. (Proverbs 10:12) A haughty condescending attitude is a result of pride and Scripture has much to say about its consequences.

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

Make time daily to “feed” upon this Living Word. It is necessary food for a fruitful Christian life.

Father, forgive me when I judge others. Your Word clearly says that You are the Judge. My pride often rises when I have been hurt or peer into the life of another and then I begin to judge. Only You can see a heart and only You can change a heart. Give me Your power to love as You have called me to do and let me leave judgment where it belongs!
