Lyin' Eyes - From His Heart - November 4
LYIN' EYES
"There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers."
Proverbs 6:16-19
I was in high school in the 1970s, arguably the greatest decade for pop music. The Eagles were all the rage in the 70s. They had hit song after hit song. One tune that was wildly popular tackled the heavy theme of adultery and deception. It was titled, Lyin’ Eyes. The chorus was especially insightful:
You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,
And your smile is a thin disguise.
I thought by now you’d realize,
There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.
THE SEVEN THINGS GOD HATES
In Proverbs 6, the LORD reveals the seven things He hates. It is no mistake that lying shows up two times on the list. God really, really, hates lying. Why?
1. God is truthfulness personified. The Scripture tells us, “It is impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18). At the very core of God’s eternal being is found truth, honesty, and integrity. Lying is completely foreign to God’s holy nature.
2. The devil is a liar and the father of lies. Jesus told us in John 8:44 that there is no truth in Satan. Indeed, it is the devil’s very nature to lie and deceive. Do you remember how Satan lied to Eve about the forbidden fruit? “You surely shall not die!” he brazenly and convincingly hissed. But that assertion was a complete and total lie. Eve and Adam died on the inside as soon as they ate (just as God had warned them), and sin and death entered the world of man.
Listen, God hates lying because a person is never more like the devil than when that person lies. Lying is a stench in the nostrils of God, and our world is overrun with it as the devil spreads his malevolent, evil nature of deception and deceit.
3. God desires truthfulness in the hearts of His children. God wants us to be holy, just as He is holy. He wants us to be like Him, and being like Him means you are telling the truth and living in truth. David said, “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being” (Psalm 51:6). Is there truth in your innermost being today?
YOU CAN’T HIDE IT
The Eagles hit the nail on the head, “There ain’t no way to hide your lyin’ eyes.” God hears everything you say, and He sees everything you do. His eyes penetrate to the very core of our being. If we are seated on a throne of lies--as Buddy charged the department store Santa in the movie Elf--without truth on our lips and in our heart, we are living a life that is an abomination to God. God cannot and will not bless those who traffic in lies.
As the LORD looks at you today, what does He see? Lyin’ eyes? Lyin’ lips? A lyin’ heart? Or does He see truth in the innermost being? Does He see someone who is confessing and forsaking all known sin and darkness and walking in the light of holiness and truth?
Will you join me in rejecting hypocrisy and living in truth by walking in the light with Jesus? Will you endeavor to always speak the truth in love, even if it costs you? Remember, “Righteous lips are the delight of kings, and he who speaks right is loved” (Proverbs 16:13). May we speak right and live right so we may give glory and honor to our King.
Love,
