Keep On Going
This devotional was written by Jim Burns
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. —Romans 5:1-5
No doubt Anne Mansfield Sullivan had a whole group of friends telling her that the blind, seven-year-old brat she was teaching wasn't worth it. Anne persisted. Anne remained faithful to what she thought was her call from God. She remained firm despite putting up with daily temper tantrums, mealtime madness, and even thankless parents.
In her heart, she knew it would be worth the pain and definite inconvenience. And was it ever! Within two years, her young student was able to read and write in Braille. Eventually, she ended up graduating cum laude from Radcliffe College, where Anne had helped this student with every lecture.
Who was this incorrigible pupil? Who was this sassy, bratty kid who made Anne Sullivan's life miserable at first? It was Helen Keller. Anne Sullivan's investment in the life of Helen Keller was the single most important force. Thus, Helen Keller devoted her entire life to aiding thousands of deaf and blind people lead a more productive life.
Did Anne Sullivan's persistence pay off? Was it worth the energy and effort? Were the results beneficial? You'd better believe it. What is God calling you to be persistent about?
