Why Is it Harder for Rich People to Get into Heaven?
APRIL 23
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Mark 10:25
Around the walls of Jerusalem and other Bible-era cities, they had small, low gates called “The Eye of a Needle” to keep people from riding through the streets at night. A person could get through, but camels? A camel might make it, but it would have been next to impossible. He would have to get down on his knees and have his entire load taken off his back.
The reason it’s so difficult for a rich man to get to heaven is that he, like the rest of us, has to get low (humble himself) like that camel and get that burden off his back.
You can often tell a lot about a person by their attitude toward money. One marriage counselor estimates 80% of all divorces in America have money mismanagement in some way or other at the root.
Some people believe money can buy security. But the Bible speaks of the deceitfulness of riches; they can be wiped out in an instant.
Jeremiah 9:23-24 says, “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches. But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.”
It’s not wrong to have money. You’re not especially holy if you’re poor, and you’re not ungodly if you’re rich. Both wealth and poverty can create stumbling blocks. Rich or poor, you must rely upon Christ alone.
