Are You Spiritually Thirsty? - Love Worth Finding - May 3

May 3, 2024 – Are You Spiritually Thirsty?
John 7:37-39
Sermon: 1882 Stop Enduring Religion

Pray Over This

“On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
John 7:37-39

Ponder This

Everybody is looking for the answer to life. Some people think the answer is intellectual. If they can just learn more facts or more theology, they will be satisfied. So, they go from class to class, and church to church, with their heads growing fuller but their hearts growing emptier. Others think that the answer is in activity: if they can just do more, work harder, and stay busy doing, they will find purpose and meaning. People wear their fingers to the bone. They are doing everything they can, and trudging to church every time the doors are open, but still have no satisfaction in their lives.

Others think the answer is emotional. They think emotional experience is the answer. And for a while, like those who were there on the last day of the feast in today’s passage, they experience ecstasy, but tomorrow they only have a memory. And they stay trying to get back to the state of emotionalism they were once in. It is time we came to understand what Jesus longs for. Jesus is making the same call to us that He gave in this passage: “Are you thirsty? Come to Me and drink.”

  • Where have you looked for answers to life? What happened?
  • What does it look like to be satisfied in Christ on an ongoing basis?

Practice This

Come to God humbly but expectantly. Ask Him to quench your thirst and bring you spiritual satisfaction.
