The Sure Harbor of Safe Faith - One Year Devotions for Women

His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” - Job 2:9

At times we may feel like a ship that has been overloaded to the point of capsizing. Job did. All in one day he had enough trouble loaded onto his boat to take him right to the bottom of the ocean! Terrible circumstances and disastrous events had combined to rob Job of his tranquil life. He lost all of his wealth, then all of his children, and finally his health.

The same trouble hit Mrs. Job as well. She lost her children, too—all ten of them. She lost her servants, her wealth, and all she held dear, just like Job did. She then had to watch helplessly as her husband succumbed to “a terrible case of boils from head to foot” (Job 2:7).

The burden of these dreadful experiences eventually brought her husband’s little craft into the safe harbor of God’s arms. Job’s suffering led him to God’s grace. But Mrs. Job felt too hurt to make for such a secure destination. She chose instead to toss aimlessly on a sea of doubt and disbelief, like a little boat adrift. She advised her husband to “curse God and die” (Job 2:9). Fortunately, Job chose to live through the suffering and learn God’s lessons for him.

Are you carrying such a burden of doubt on your decks that you feel a “sinking” sensation that has no equal? Are your troubles overwhelming you? You can decide that God doesn’t care, or you can let the winds of adversity drive you to the sure harbor of safe faith.
