Taking Care of #1

1 Cor. 10:12: So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! (NIV).

Is it possible that in an effort to be the best parent you can be, you sometimes neglect your own spiritual growth? When the demands of your family require you to be on the go from dawn until late at night, you may be tempted to sacrifice your quiet time, prayer or other spiritual disciplines. Paul recognized this tendency in the people he was discipling and cautioned against it. You will have a hard time giving to anyone from an empty spiritual "cup." Even Jesus had to take time away from the crowds and His disciples to talk to the Father.

When we forget to give God the best of our day, we may begin to see issues like anger, bitterness, resentment, and moral dilemmas arise. We are not doing our kids any favors when we are spiritually exhausted. As Paul was saying goodbye to the Ephesian elders, he cautioned them, "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers" (Acts 20:28 NIV). Notice he warned them first to keep watch over themselves; then their flock. What a valuable lesson for us as parents.

When your relationship with God is your first priority, you are in a better position to serve others and your family.
