Our eternal Creator and close Friend
January 6, 2011
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
Psalm 139:7-10
In the 1700s, a popular line of thought called Deism arose in the U.S. and in Western Europe. Basically, deism says that while God created the world, he is essentially uninvolved and uninterested in anything that is going on today.
But this cruel and bleak picture of God couldn't be further from the truth! The God we worship is both a transcendent Creator, bigger than anything you can imagine, and he's one who is intimately involved in his creation.
We know God because he came near in the person of Jesus Christ. As Christians, Jesus isn't someone we simply know about. He's someone we know! We can say with the apostle Paul, "I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me" (2 Timothy 1:12).
Our God is not out there somewhere beyond the clouds. Our Savior by his Spirit is as close and as real as the skin on your bones! He's someone who loves you; and nothing shall separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
So when you feel God is distant, remember that he hasn't forgotten you, but he sent his Son to die for you!
WORSHIP GOD AS BOTH AN ETERNAL CREATOR AND A CLOSE FRIEND.
