How to Know You Worship God Appropriately
January 17
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
As we look at the commandments of God, many people think the one in today’s verse is the most irrelevant. Most Americans simply don’t struggle with the idea of fashioning a golden calf and falling down to worship it.
I heard about a fellow who was at church listening to a sermon on the Ten Commandments. After the service, he looked at his wife and said, “Well, at least I haven’t made any carved images!”
But I would submit to you today that most Americans are breaking the second commandment because there are so many false images of God in our culture. There’s a line of thought that God wants us to be nothing more than happy and healthy, so many worship that god. There’s also many who, under the guise of being family-focused, worship their children and put them before everything else in their lives. That’s a sin!
How you conceive of God matters. If He’s just one of the idols on your shelf that you pull down when you need it, then you’re violating this commandment because you’re worshiping a little God. But if He is your all-consuming everything, then all the other aspects of your life are going to be submitted to Him first.
WORSHIP GOD APPROPRIATELY BY MAKING HIM THE ALL-CONSUMING PRIORITY OVER EVERYTHING ELSE IN YOUR LIFE.
