1 Peter 3:15-16 (NIV)
"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander."
How do you share your faith in a secular world?
Pavle Cekov, Ambassadors for Christ International's director in Slovakia, was invited to speak at a youth club in his city. The club works primarily with young people whose lives are in turmoil because they are using drugs or alcohol. In the secular environment of post-Communist Eastern Europe, turning to drugs and alcohol is not unusual for those whose lives are adrift without a secure spiritual and emotional foundation.
Pavle talked about the dangers of practicing occultism to an audience of more than 30 young people, most of whom were unbelievers. They had many questions and he took time to answer them and to spend time praying with those who requested ministry.
The next month the club invited him back to talk to them about evolution and to lead a discussion of how faith in God is compatible with the discoveries of science. Again, the young people asked their hard questions and Pavle clarified the issues with patience and a sense of humor.
Pavle is always ready to give a good answer to those who ask him why he believes in Jesus as the Lord of his life. He is not afraid to share his hope in Christ.
It is often hard to share about faith in a secular context in which the ideas of belief in God, sacrifice for his kingdom, and dedication to his values like generosity, self-control, and forgiveness are snickered at. When the ultimate virtue is 'tolerance,' to speak of Jesus as the only way is viewed as culturally offensive.
Are you ready with open, respectful answers when asked about your faith? If you feel uncomfortable explaining your allegiance to Jesus Christ, will you remember Pavle and your many brothers and sisters who have dedicated their lives to obeying the Lord's commands?
