Time with God - January 20, 2015
Ecclesiastes 2:1-3
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility. I said of laughter, “It is madness”, and of pleasure, “What does it accomplish?” I explored with my mind how to stimulate my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely, and how to take hold of folly, until I could see what good there is for the sons of men to do under heaven the few years of their lives.
We think we will find satisfaction and fulfillment if we pursue pleasure as the goal of our lives, but this way of life is futile!
We all know the truth of this in our own experience. When we make the goal of life pleasing ourselves, it doesn’t make us more fulfilled, but less fulfilled. It is a useless waste of our lives.
It is not wrong to enjoy pleasure. God made our bodies and He made us with a great capacity for pleasure and that is good. Never feel guilty about pleasure unless you are getting it in an ungodly way.
But enjoying good pleasure is very different from making pleasure the thing you pursue in life. Don’t pursue pleasure; pursue God! You were made for Him. He is not hard to find. In fact, He is waiting for you today.
