“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits”
Stop, take time to notice and remember what God has done in your life!
Don’t you “love it” when you are about to fall asleep and just as you are nodding off your brain decides it’s a good idea to remind you of the time you had spinach in your teeth while on that first date, or the time you said the wrong thing during an important interview or the time when you accidentally sent the message to the wrong person?!!
Why does our brain do that to us? I don’t have a scientific answer for you right now but isn’t it curious that our brains can effortlessly think about embarrassing moments that make us get so annoyed with ourselves? Or how we can effortlessly start craving the foods we said we would give up in order to lose some weight?
Thinking about our blessings in the midst of tough seasons doesn’t seem to come so effortlessly to us. Thinking about how God has provided in the past doesn’t seem to happen naturally when we are going through a time of need. Thinking about how God has healed us in the past doesn’t seem to be the first thing that pops into our mind when the doctor gives us a bad report.
Just like David we have to tell ourselves not to forget God’s benefits. His blessings, his mercy, his favour. We have to remind ourselves over and over again of who God is, what he has done and what he is doing.
Let us not be like the Israelites who often seemed to forget God’s goodness (Psalm 106 - 7). Forgetting God’s goodness led them to do foolish things, caused unbelief and rebellion and eventually ignited God’s anger.
God wants us to pay attention to what he is doing in our lives. Remembering and looking intentionally for his goodness will increase our faith and get us through the mighty storms that life throws at us.
