Going the Distance - Warrior Mom Wisdom - Week of February 24
Going the Distance brings the Vision into Focus
Have you ever gone on a long car-ride with a long stretch of road ahead of you? At a certain point, the road is so long that it appears to drop off into nothingness, but the more you travel, the closer that seeming drop comes into focus, in fact, it turns into the road below your tires. I was running the other day and God impressed upon me the importance of looking straight ahead, rather than looking down at my feet. I looked straight ahead and it happened to be the place on my run, where I could literally see almost a mile ahead of me; it was a straight stretch of road. At first, I thought, “Gees, I don’t like looking straight ahead; it makes the run look too long.” But God showed me that as I focus on the road straight ahead, the part that seems to disappear becomes more clear the further I run. I realized that looking straight ahead while going the distance brings the vision (the goal, the destination) into focus. It also keeps you from being distracted from looking down on the ground as well as thinking down upon yourself.
Additionally, it keeps you from being distracted by benches, people, rocks, sticks or pinecones (i.e., distractions of the world that may cause you to stop and sit or pick something up that was not intended for you) to your right or left. Consider for a moment the present goal, vision, hope, dream, responsibility, or task you are presently facing.
I challenge you to look straight ahead at it. The longer you focus on it while simultaneously putting one foot in front of the other, the clearer it will become.
Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Proverbs 4:25
And most importantly, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2-3
