The Weekly Focal Point - July 5, 2018

Many take offense at our call to trust Christ for the forgiveness of their sins because it is so exclusive. They stumble over the words of Jesus when he said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn.14:6). They despise the tone of our evangelism when it echoes the biblical assertion that “there is salvation in no one else” and there’s “no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Ac.4:12).

But if the people in our generation would begin to see the plight of their sins before a holy God, their concern over exclusivity would vanish—as it does on every sinking ship when the crew directs men and women to the exclusive means to prevent their drowning. Imperiled passengers rarely care that the lifeboats are the “only way” to be saved as long as they are given access to one! In such cases, concerns over exclusivity seem silly and are clearly overshadowed by the relief of having been informed and called to participate in the reliable means that secure salvation.

Yes, eternal salvation is exclusively through the work of Christ, but the role of Christians is to be as universal as we can in sending out the call to everyone!
