I Am Seen
By Susan Aken
“She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’” Genesis 16:13
I desire assurance that someone sees the real me and loves me as I am.
Mistreated, Hagar, the Egyptian slave speaking in today’s verse, ran away from her mistress. Pregnant, alone in the desert, and uncared for, she encountered the Lord God. He told her to return and gave her hope through a promise for her unborn son. After this encounter, she said, “You are the God who sees me.” She needed to know someone saw her and understood her struggles.
We all need to be seen and cared for. Why are we so quick to share on social media everything from a meal we made to our sorrows? We need connection. We seek to be recognized as individuals. But who can be aware of every joy, struggle, or hurt we feel? Who can understand? God can. God knows every thought and even how many hairs are on each head. He knew each of us in our mother’s womb. There’s nowhere we can go where He will not be.
He’s the peace that’s beyond comprehension. He’s the voice that whispers to our hearts, “I love you”. Often He uses those around us to show His love but even if we feel others don’t notice us, our Heavenly Father does. By faith we believe He exists and that He’s good.
Even when millions suffer simultaneously, no one gets lost in the crowd or is forgotten.
He sees you. He knows you. You’re not alone.
