Perfect Love
By Jana Kelley

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

Though no marriage is perfect, the bond between a husband and wife points to a love that transcends time.

My niece and her fiancé focused their friendship, relationship, and then engagement on the Lord and how they could serve Him together. They even decided to save their first kiss for their wedding. As you can imagine, they are an unusual couple.

I didn’t get to attend the wedding, but I imagined the ceremony on the day it took place. I could almost hear the words of the minister, just before that anticipated first kiss:

“Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

This statement is taken from Matthew 19:6. The word “separate” is the same word used by Paul, the author of Romans, in today’s passage when he tells the Christians in Rome they’re unified with Jesus Christ and surrounded by God’s love. His love is unaffected by even the most severe circumstance.

A marriage between two Christians who truly want to please Jesus is beautiful. But every marriage involves two sinful humans. Life gets tedious. People grow tired and grumpy. Unexpected challenges surprise every couple. Though marriage is a wonderful gift from God, every husband and wife is imperfect.

But God is different. He perfectly loves His children and absolutely nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love. We are held secure.

If you’ve trusted in Christ for salvation, you’re a child of God. You rest firm in God’s love. May that knowledge give you peace and confidence and inspire you to share that precious gift with others. Is there someone in your life who needs to know this amazing truth? Will you tell them?
