Your Worth as God’s Child
By Andrea Chatelain
“Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God...” John 1:12
Sometimes I take my rights for granted. I live as a part of the majority in a wealthy, free country. However, my view of a cushy, perfect world was shattered when I started teaching English to Immigrants. I heard the same stories over and over. Stories of oppressed people who just wanted to be free in their homeland. Of moments of violence and terror as they were pushed to the outskirts of other countries because no one wanted refugees. They had no security, little hope, and no rights.
Hearing their experiences woke up my slumbering heart. Now, as I look at my children, I wonder how different their lives would be if we lived on the other side of the globe. But one thing wouldn’t change. They would still have the most important right ever given—to become children of God through faith in Jesus.
Sadly a lot of us take that for granted too. With numerous churches in every city and most towns, we forget that the right to be called God’s children came at a high price. Just like the bloody battlefields our history textbooks show the freedom we’re willing to fight for, the cross demonstrated the price of our spiritual freedom. Jesus fought for our freedom as He left His heavenly glory, walked the earth as a man, suffered on the cross, conquered death, and rose victorious. Praise Jesus that He counted us something worth fighting for!
So when we open our Bibles, bow our heads, or step into church we do so knowing that our God loves us and fought for us as a Father fights to protect His children. Our spiritual freedom is a gift, not something to attain, and we are stronger as we walk in the freedom found in Christ and our identity of children of God.
