Working for More Than Money

“Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.” Colossians 3:22

No matter how hectic or monotonous, my job, your job, is so much more than clocking in hours and receiving a paycheck.

In my office, I have a picture of an old-fashioned typewriter with a simple prayer I wrote printed underneath. The words remind me to thank God for the opportunity to serve Him in that place and through the tasks that face me each day. Though I still get stressed at times, I try to view my job as an offering to the Lord and pray that He’ll be pleased with it.

I wrote that prayer after reading Colossians 3:22 and reflecting on the eternal impact I can make, whatever my role or responsibility. When we bring God into our work, our goal is no longer earning money or trying to please our boss. We want to honor God with the work of our hands and minds.

This mindset also calls us to work hard even when no one is watching. Work becomes a sacred duty that allows us to respond to the goodness and grace we’ve received. We don’t have to earn God’s favor, but because we’ve received it, we’re inspired to bring honor and glory to His name in everything we do.

Whether you work in an office our outdoors, at home or in school, ask God to help you remember that you’re working for Him and not others or merely to accomplish goals. Pray that He may be honored and glorified through all you do and then work joyfully for Him.
