For the Soul That Needs to Be Reminded

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.” - Psalm 3:5
SOMETHING TO PONDER
I have had many a night where sleep has evaded me for many a reason. My children were small, my health was bad, my finances have triggered worry, I have had nightmares, or I am just too busy doing that I forget to rest. Maybe you are the same?
Statistics show us that worry, and fear are two very large reasons why people can’t sleep. It causes circumstantial insomnia. Maybe that is what is wrong with you right now? Maybe when you lay down to sleep, your brain is activated by the feel of the pillow, and you struggle to shut it off long enough to find rest. Once your brain is awake, your nervous system and anxiety are following suit, and you are unable to sleep.
Psalm 3 begins by telling us that David is under pressure. He has foes and they are numerous. Not only has he foes, but the talk of the town is that He won’t win, those foes will defeat him, because God is not on his side. But friend, that is never true. Yet we read here that David lays down to sleep, waking up because the Lord sustains him.
How does he sleep so well when he has so much happened around him?
I believe that David sleeps so well because of the words found in verse 3 and 4, they read: “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain.” David is giving himself a good talking to, he is contradicting the lies from those around him and holding fast to truth. The truth of the scenario is that the Lord is on his side, the Lord is fighting for him, and He will not be defeated because God lifts his head.
David talks to his soul, reminds himself of the truth and then lies his head down ready to sleep, the sleep of the righteous (Psalm 91).
So, I wonder, as we lay our heads down this evening, do our souls need a good talking to first? Do we need to remind them that we are children of God, we are sons and daughters of the Almighty, the omniscient one, all powerful one, the God who created and creates? Do we need to remind ourselves that hard times will come but God is fighting for us, and all things are for His good and glory as Romans tells us? Do we need to sit down and say “no Devil, not today!” Maybe that’s you, maybe you need to do as David did and then rest your head on that pillow knowing God has you in the palm of His hand.
I trust you sleep well my friend.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Father God,
Tonight as I lay my head down, would you be with me? Holy Spirit, I ask you to remind my soul of the good things you have done for me, and all the times you have had my back, times when I didn’t even realise it. God, I ask that you remind my soul that you are good, your promises are yes and Amen, and that you fight for your children. If it is not good, it is not finished.
Help me to sleep well this evening, help me to close my eyes and wake up feeling refreshed because you Lord, You are the one who sustains me,
In Jesus name,
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. Meditate on God's Goodness to you. On the fact that you are a child of the almighty God, and nothing can harm you because your future is sealed in Heaven with the Lord.
2. remind yourself that worry is a joy stealer. You do not need to worry but rather hand all your cares to the Lord because He is the greatest listener, and He will act on your behalf.
3. Remind yourself that God neither slumbers nor sleeps, so leave your cares and problems with Him and let Him resolve them in His Holy way. You can do nothing to change it, so let’s get some sleep, friend, and trust God to move on our behalf.
