If you are married, one of the most important things you can do each day is spend time with God in prayer for your husband. While we may pray for other people in our lives–children, parents, other family and friends–our husbands should get special attention because of what the Bible says about a man and his wife, and about the power of prayer.
The following are 10 powerful prayers to pray over your husband - to strengthen him and lift him up to the Lord.
When I think about husbands and wives, I’m drawn to Ephesians chapter 5. Several verses establish the foundation of why wives should be in prayer for their husbands multiple times a day. Ephesians 5:31-33 says, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of You also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
According to the Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, you and your husband are of one flesh, just like Jesus and His believers are one. There is no one else in your life that can claim that status with you. I believe the ultimate show of respect and love for our husbands is that we would be on our knees each day praying to the Father for all of his various needs. Not only does this cover your husband spiritually, but it strengthens tour bond with your husband as the Lord allows you to see his needs.
Prayer changes people and things. Prayer doesn’t change God’s mind or what He has preordained will happen in someone’s life, but it changes our relationship with Him as we “ask, seek and knock," knowing that there is nothing that He cannot do. It keeps us in constant communication with our Father who knows us and knows what is best for us. Therefore, let us keep praying for our husbands, that God’s will be done in their lives to bring Him honor and glory.
Heavenly Father, thank You that my husband’s faith is of utmost priority to You, as it is for all of us. Thank You that You sent Your Son to die an undeserved, painful death to pay for my husband’s sins so that You and my husband will never be separated (John 3:16). Now Father, I ask that the Holy Spirit would prompt my husband every day to read his Bible, to pray without ceasing, and to lead us in our efforts to learn more about You. May he always impress upon his family to walk with the Lord, and to not give up on meeting together to fellowship and grow with other believers (Hebrews 10:25).
Lord, my husband, like all of us, is accosted by the world, the flesh and the devil every single day (Ephesians 2:2-3). As Alicia Searl says in her article, “7 Powerful Prayers for Your Husband”, “Prayer is our weapon against the enemy, and currently, that enemy is seemingly alive and well, destroying the roles of men and women.” Thank You that, as it says in Proverbs 18:10, Your name is a strong tower and my husband can run to You and be safe. Please give my husband the strength to say no to temptation, as he wears the full armor of God, so that he can take a “stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11).
Abba Father, each day my husband has to make a myriad of decisions, big and small. Some affect his work, some his health, some his family life and more. Lord I pray that in all of his decision-making he would “...seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). I know that if he fixes his eyes on You and Your will, he will make good decisions. Thank You, Lord that You promise that if he trusts in You with all of his heart, and doesn’t try to lean on his own wisdom, and acknowledges You in all of his ways, You will make straight his paths (Proverbs 3:4-6).
My precious Lord, I pray for my husband’s strength in many ways. I ask that You would give him physical health and strength so that he enjoys a long and abundant life. But I also ask You for strength of character and integrity so that he would please You in all that he does. I know that such strength can only come from You Lord, so please, as it says in Isaiah 41:10, I pray that he would not fear or be dismayed because You are with him, and that You would uphold him with Your righteous and mighty right hand. And I ask that You would keep Your promise that he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength (Phillipians 4:13)
Thank You, Lord that You placed my husband as the head of our family, an incredible responsibility for him. I know the world today doesn’t always support the idea of wives submitting to husbands, but I pray I Peter 3:7 over him as he leads me in Christ: “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with You of the grace of life, so that Your prayers may not be hindered.”
Heavenly Father, we are well aware that there are many families who are unemployed, so thank You that my husband has work. I pray that he would work at it with his whole heart as working for You and not for man (Colossians 3:23). I also pray that his work would honor You and that He would enjoy Your favor as You establish the work of His hands. (Psalm 90:17)
Thank You, Father that You watch over every minute of my husband’s life, including his health. Lord, I ask for Your mercy to keep him well so that he is able to work and do all of the things that our family needs of him. Holy Spirit, I pray that You would inspire him to do all that he can in his power to maintain good health–eating well, exercising and getting adequate sleep. Lord, we trust that You will be with him in sickness and in health, and that You will use any sickness as a means to draw him closer to You.
Most merciful Lord, we know that we are influenced by the company that we keep. I pray that You would provide godly influences so that it will be easier to honor You with these relationships. I pray that he would also be a leader among his friends, even leading those who don’t know You to come to faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
Please keep him from temptation when he is out with friends, but if he is tempted Father, please provide a way out that he would be able to stand up under the temptation (I Corinthians 10:13).
Abba Father, You know how much I love my husband. There is so much hardship in the world, but I pray that my husband’s life would be one in which he enjoys much joy and peace. Even more, I humbly ask You that his life would be marked by the fruits of the Holy Spirit living within him: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. May he grow in these characteristics and make a difference in the world as a result (Galatians 5:22-23).
Heavenly Father, within the last several years we have seen more attacks against Christianity than ever before in our lifetimes. Atheism, agnosticism, moral relativism, and “spiritualism” abound. So many people have no idea who You are or have no desire to know You, the One True God who made them and can save them. I pray Lord that because of my husband’s commitment to You–to know You and making You known to others–that lives will be changed for eternity. I pray that he would know that you are always with him to give him the words and the boldness to witness to the lost. Please give him a passion to speak truth at work, in our community, in schools, in our local government, and even at church.
Thank You Lord that as Your beloved daughter, I can come boldly before Your throne of grace and ask all of these things for my husband (Hebrews 4:16) . Please bless our marriage as together we look to bring honor and glory to Your name through it.
Let us continue to persevere in prayer, knowing that God hears us and is faithful to work in the hearts and lives of our husbands for His glory. Through prayer, we participate in God’s plans and witness His transformative power in our marriages, families, and communities. May we always seek God’s guidance, give thanks for His blessings, and trust Him to do far more than we could ask or imagine.
