7 Prayers for Work from Job Searching to Climbing the Career Ladder and More!
- Rachel Dawson
- Updated Sep 04, 2019
Whether you are searching for a new job, working hard at your current position, fighting burnout in your work, or struggling with coworker conflicts, you can bring it before the Lord in prayer today.
Like Psalm 90:17 says, the Lord our God has established the work of our hands. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that the Lord has good plans for us — plans that will prosper us and not harm us, plans that will give us hope and a future. So, let's make Colossians 3:23 our focus today: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man."

Here are 7 prayers (and 5 Bible verses!) for your work today:

1. A Prayer for Job Hunting
Slide 1 of 8Dear God,
You know my needs. You know my desire for a job, for work I enjoy doing, for the next step in my career to present itself. I pray that you would guide me as I continue on this job hunting journey. May I focus first on your will for my life, putting your desires and your plan above my own wishes and wants. Open doors to new opportunities that you desire for me, and equip me with the skills, knowledge, and wisdom I need to take steps forward in this process. As I craft my resume, write cover letters, submit my applications, connect with new companies and potential employers, and go on interviews, give me the words to speak and the courage to share who I am and what I can do. Give me confidence that can only come from you, and give me humility too. I trust you, Lord-- my life is in your hands. Your will be done. Thank you for being near to me every step of the way and thank you for always providing for my every need. May this all be for your glory.

2. A Prayer for the Work Day Ahead
Slide 2 of 8Father, thank you for all the ways you’ve blessed me, specifically with this job that pays my bills and puts food on my table. Thank you that ALL work has significance because work is good. Help me bring you glory today, through my actions, my words, through the good work I do to bring order to my little corner of the world. Help me view my work as a blessing and not a curse. Give me grace and strength for the hardest aspects of my job. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

3. A Prayer for a God-Honoring Work Life
Slide 3 of 8Father, I come before you thankful that you have made work a part of life and given me the opportunity to glorify you in my work. Thank you that I can work hard and go to bed tired each day. Thank you for the good days and the difficult ones, and for the gifts you have given me to help this world be a better place through my work.
Establish the work of my hands by helping me to be productive, patient, focused, and insightful. Keep me from distractions and from technology hindering my work instead of helping it. May your Spirit lead me in my work and help me to be joyful, creative, and worshipful–constantly reminding me of your love and that you’re the reason I have breath in my lungs. Teach me to align my work, family, church life, and rest in a way that would maximize your glory and allow me to bear the most fruit for your kingdom.

4. A Prayer for Rediscovering Joy in Your Work
Slide 4 of 8“Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” Proverbs 22:29 (NIV)
Lord, help me to do all that You call me to do in this season and not one thing more.
What do You want me to do? What do You want me to stop? What boundaries should I set on my work?
Dear Lord, I need to regain joy in my tasks. Help me to worship You as I work, doing it all for the King of Kings. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. This content was adapted from "How to Rediscover Joy in Your Work" by Encouragement for Today.

5. A Prayer for Resolving Coworker Conflicts
Slide 5 of 8Dear Lord,
I bring before you today these challenging circumstances that have arisen at work. I pray that you would soften my heart and the hearts of my coworkers. I pray that you bring peace to us in the midst of conflict and chaos, and that you would be near to each of us. I know that you are a loving and gracious God, and I pray that you would help me to be more loving and gracious toward my coworkers today. May I find humility in you, and may I be the first to forgive, to make amends, and to move forward in a healthy way. You have placed me in this job, among these people, and I pray that I would glorify you through all of my actions and conversations here. Help me to see others the way you see them, and give me an extra measure of grace and patience today.

Lord, give me the courage and faith to follow your call – even when it means taking risks. Protect me from the doubts and fears that prevent me from fulfilling your purpose for me. Help me to trust in you and feel your never-ending love and presence.
