Pregnancy and giving birth can be one of the most amazing experiences in a woman’s life. However, it can also be extremely stressful. Though the medical world has made huge strides, miscarriage, stillborn birth, and other complications still occur. As a result, fear and anxiety can increase as the delivery gets closer. Using the power of scriptural prayer for safe delivery can help calm those anxious feelings.
Scriptural prayer is simply using the words of Scripture in your prayers. Why pray Scripture? When we pray Scripture, we can be sure we are praying in God’s will, and the power of unleashing the sword of the Lord is huge! Below you will find examples of scriptural prayer for safe delivery and a healthy baby that if claimed will help calm your fears. I suggest making them your own and incorporating them into your daily prayer life.
Lord Jesus, You have said, “Do not worry about tomorrow,” but I confess, I’m worried. Pregnancy is such a miraculous yet, scary journey. I feel like so much could go wrong. Oh Lord, when my mind goes to “what if’s” and “what then’s” teach me to shift my focus to Your holy character and loving nature. You have promised to give me immeasurable peace as I focus on what’s true, noble, right, pure lovely, and admirable about You. I pray for a safe pregnancy and a peaceful mind during my pregnancy. Reassure my anxious heart I pray. Help me to take every thought captive as I trust in You (Matthew 6:34, Philippians 4:8, 2 Corinthians 10:5).
God, I praise You that I am dwelling in the shelter of your care. You are the God most high who is sovereign and loving. I praise You that You will be my rock and my fortress as I go through this pregnancy. I trust You because You are good. Thank You, that You love this child even more than I do. Thank You that no harm will overtake me. I am rooted and grounded in You (Psalm 91:1-2,10).
Lord God, I praise You that children are a treasure from you. I am extremely blessed to carry this child. You have turned my mourning into dancing and given me the desire of my heart. Surround my womb with your protection I pray. Hide this little one in the shelter of Your presence as he /she grows and develops. I pray that no weapon formed against him will prosper but that He will grow and be used mightily by you (Psalm 127:3, Psalm 30:11, Isaiah 54:17).
Holy One, when the pain of labor becomes unbearable, help me to be strong and courageous knowing that You will not leave me nor forsake me. Help me not to get discouraged as I push. I praise You for Your promise that I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. I pray for Your protection over the entire delivery process (Joshua 1:9, Hebrews 13:5, Psalm 27:13).
I praise You, Almighty One, that even as I head into the delivery room, Your promise stands, “The Lord Your God is with you, the mighty warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you.” Thank You that You will quiet my fear with Your love and You will rejoice over me with singing even as I labor intensely. As I fix my thoughts on You, dear Lord, You will keep both me and my spouse in perfect peace through the delivery process. I pray that no harm will come to my precious little one, through the delivery process (Zephaniah 3:17, Isaiah 26:3).
Father God, I lift my prayer for a safe delivery before You. I praise You that You go before me, behind me, above me, and beneath me into the delivery room. Thank You, that You love me and this child beyond what I can imagine. I pray that You will shield my baby during the delivery process with your faithfulness. I pray for protection around her heart, lungs, and every other tiny body part. Thank You, that she is fearfully and wonderfully made and that all the days of her life have been ordained by You. I pray Holy Spirit, breath of God, that You will continue to breathe life into her tiny lungs even through the birthing process (Ephesians 6:15, Psalm 139:13, John 14:26).
Holy Spirit, I pray that You will fill my mind with scripture verses to pray over this child and to take with me in my mind to the delivery room. I pray that as I birth this child I will be faithful in prayer. Thank You, dear Lord, for giving me the resource of praying Scripture as a weapon to defeat the enemy. I pray You will fill my doctors with wisdom as we move closer to the birth. Thank You, that as medical decisions are being made for me or the baby, You will give wisdom. I praise You that I can trust You! (Ephesians 6:17, Isaiah 30:21, James 1:5).
Lord God, I know that You have not given me the spirit of fear. You want me to have a sound mind as I move towards my delivery date. I pray for joy after I give birth and against any postpartum depression. Thank You, that even if my hormones are all over the place, I can count on You to hold me steady. I praise You that if I need medical help after giving birth to deal with depression, there are doctors who can help me. Help me to be honest about how I feel after delivering so that I can receive the help I might need. I praise You that in the moments after I give birth You will fill me with joy and delight as I bond with my new little one (2 Timothy 1:7).
Holy One, I praise You that You have heard my prayer for safe delivery and that You promise to answer me in my hour of need. You are good and everything You do is good, thank You that I can trust You. I lay all my anxiety down before You knowing that You care for both me and my baby. I trust You for joy and peace (Psalm 10:17, Psalm 119:68, 1 Peter 5:7).
Beyond praying Scripture, it is helpful to create a playlist of comforting scriptures and worship songs for the delivery room. In the months leading up to delivery, create a playlist of comforting scriptures and worship songs. As you are in labor the words of Scripture and worship music will comfort your heart and keep you calm. Having a playlist of 20+ songs and scriptures will bring courage as you labor.
This article is a bit more personal for me as there was a season in our family’s life where each of my daughters and my daughter-in-law lost babies. Over the span of five months in the year, 2014, we lost five babies through miscarriage. It was a dark season for our family. However, each of the girls claimed specific scriptures and listened to certain worship songs. They each unleashed the power of prayer and praise. In both the scriptures and the worship songs they found comfort and hope. 2015 will always remain “the year of the new song” for our family, because each of the girls got pregnant within days and weeks of each other. Each one delivered a healthy baby. We now affectionately call those four six-year-olds, “the Quads”. I can’t guarantee that God will work the same way in your life. What I can guarantee is that unleashing the power of Scripture and praise will calm your fears and lessen your anxiety as you pray for a safe delivery and healthy baby.
God is the author and sustainer of life. He Himself goes before, behind, above, and beneath those who put their trust in Him. When fear or anxiety cripple your thinking, learn to unleash the power of scriptural prayer for safe delivery and for a healthy baby. He promises that those who fix their minds on Him and His Word, will experience perfect peace. Prayer is far more powerful than we believe and God honors those who pray His Word.
