36 Bible Verses about Health and Healing That Show God Cares about Us Body and Soul

The Bible has much to say on the topic of health, no doubt because God is the author and creator of our bodies, minds, and souls. But it also has much to address on the topic of the need for–and the blessing of– healing from God. Since we live in a fallen world where bodies, minds, and souls break down, there are many verses that speak of the restoration of health.

The fact that God cares so much about our bodies, minds, and souls should embolden us to have faith that He has a word for us if we are struggling in any of these areas. He wants His people complete, and sometimes that calls for being exceptional stewards of our bodies. Other times, when we are sick, He calls us (through the letter of James) to persevere through trials so that we would be made complete through suffering. In this way we become imitators of Christ.

In the following verses you will see how Holy Spirit-inspired writers spoke about health of body, mind, and spirit, giving us many truths to challenge and encourage us. May we hide them in our hearts, and speak them back to God in prayer and adoration–and teach them to others who also may be blessed by God’s word on their health.

Bible Verses about Physical Health

“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones” (Proverbs 3:7).

"My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh" (Proverbs 4:20-22).

"And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail” (Isaiah 58:11).

“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones” (Proverbs 15:30).

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1).

Bible Verses about Healing the Body

“He said, “If you listen carefully to the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you” (Exodus 15:26).

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:29-31).

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (1 Corinthians 12:9).

"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5:14-15).

Bible Verses about the Mind/Mental Health

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up”, (Proverbs 12:25).

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love” (1 John 4:18).

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, that your life would overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13).

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Bible Verses about Renewing the Mind

“God is near to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" (Isaiah 41:10).

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

“I sought the Lord and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7)

Bible Verses about Soul/Spirit Health

“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well” 3 John 1:2.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him” (Psalm 62:5).

“The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple” (Psalm 19:7).

“Who is the person who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will dwell in prosperity…” (Psalm 25:12-13).

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Bible Verses about Healing of the Soul

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul” (Psalm 23:2).

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Prayer for Health of Body, Mind, and Soul

Heavenly Father, you have graciously given us everything we need for the life you have given us. We pray that the Holy Spirit would remind us each day how we can be better stewards of our bodies, minds, and souls. May we focus on those things that bring life to the body, and when we struggle with illness or injury, may we know that You are intimately involved in carrying, comforting, and lifting us. Help us in these times to look beyond our struggle and fix our eyes on Jesus, who suffered for us so that we would never be separated from God. Be near us, Lord, on good days and bad, because we can’t live a moment without You. In Jesus’ most holy name we pray. Amen.
