5 Beautiful Things We Can Learn from Autumn

With the season of fall just days away, we are already getting excited over cooler breezes, leaves changing, and pumpkins coming out. I am someone who typically gets excited about every season that is approaching.
I believe that there is something beautiful and exciting about every time of the year. This is so much like life. We all live in various seasons, but there is joy to be found in each one. Today I want to share 5 lessons that we can learn from autumn.
1. Change Can Be Beautiful
If you are anything like me, change is not your favorite thing in the world. There is comfort in familiarity. We look at the gorgeous summer trees lush and green around us and think, how could they become more beautiful than this?
Then comes fall, and each leaf begins to transform into shades of yellow, orange, and red. There is a watercolor of nature displayed all around us. Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
Fall reminds us that just when we thought the trees were complete, God was not done transforming them. We too are still be transformed into His image more and more each day through the help and refinement of the Holy Spirit.
2. People Desire Comfort
Whether this is a positive need or negative, people do hope to be comforted. One of the main staples of fall is the idea of holding a warm mug with a spiced latte of some sort. Although we may find temporary moments of comfort in the things listed above or in autumn, we never can have that true inner comfort without Christ.
The Holy Spirit enables us to have a peace greater than our knowledge. We have the closeness of our Savior who loves us within us always. This world is not a place that is comfortable. Sin puts us in very stressful and chaotic situations, however, when we have Jesus in our hearts, we can experience a steady relationship with the God of all comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3-5 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.” Aside from the fact that comfort can be defined as a thing of luxury and relaxation, comfort can also be defined as ministering and loving in hard situations.
When we have learned of the comfort the Lord has given to us in abundance, we can share that comfort with others who desire to have rest in this crazy world.
3. God Brings Relief
One of the greatest qualities of this season is the relief in which it provides. The weather which was blazing hot now becomes cool and breezy. In the same way that this season brings a sense of ease, God also gives us ease.
He says in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Whether you are coming out of a trial right now or not, fall reminds us of the refreshment we can find when we go to God our Father and give Him our burdens. He is more than capable to handle our struggles and circumstances. He also tells us to come to Him and He will give us rest. When we obey and go to Him, we can discover the freedom of resting in the arms of our holy God.
4. The Beauty of Creation Is All Around Us
Fall reveals to us the stunning parts of nature. The season of autumn helps us to acknowledge the details from honey crisp apples being picked off of a tree, to a large pumpkin grown in a patch, to a maple decorated beautifully with bright colors. Thinking about the details of acorns, pies, haystacks, fall wreaths, and evening strolls in the neighborhood gets me excited.
There is a clear and present beauty among us in this time period. This reminds us of how beautiful God’s creation is and ultimately points us to the beauty of the Lord Himself.
Psalm 27:4 says, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”
5. Fall Is the Most Productive Season
Coming out of a season of summer and schedules being off, many of us set back into a wonderful rhythm and routine. We get back to school or regular work hours, or we even get back into the gym.
A study done by NYS Society of CPA’s discovered in 2018, “Overall, it was found that the fall is the most productive season, as the most productive months are September, October and November.” This unique time is a moment of great productivity and effectiveness.
This can also carry over into our faith. In this season we can revamp and get back to a daily Bible study if we have gotten off schedule. We can jump into a new small group at church. We can take these opportunities of meeting new people and sharing Christ’s love with them.
God Himself is productive. Psalm 121:4 says, “Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.” He spends time watching over His people. He is the Creator who continues to create and never needs to sleep.
With fall on the way, may we consider these thoughts on what we can learn from this incredible season. It is a favorite time of year for many and although the activities and the beauty around us can be fun, it is important for us not to miss the spiritual lessons within. We can look towards Christ in this season and glean the joys of His abundance.
