Need some powerful God is good quotes to get you through your day?
“God is good,” is often heard in songs, devotionals, sermons, and in situations like ours when we face death, an unexpected outcome, or when life leaves us feeling isolated, weak, and alone. Christians tote this phrase as if it’s a band-aid in our faith first aid kit. But is God all the time?
We had just gotten back from vacation and my father-in-law wasn’t himself. My mother-in-law texted that she was taking him to the emergency room. What we didn’t expect was for the hospital to seemingly wash their hands of him. Nine days later after being in isolation at the beginning of the pandemic, they sent him home with a death sentence. Less than 70 hours later, Mike passed from this side of heaven to the other.
When we began to make funeral arrangements—others kept trying to comfort us with the phrase, “God is good.” But the more I heard the phrase, the angrier I became. How is God good when my children had to witness how hard it was for him to pass away? How could God be good when he didn’t heal Mike of his infection? Where was God when we had to bury him alone in the wake of the pandemic?
Can We Say 'God Is Good' Quotes?
According to Merriam Webster, the definition of God is, “a being in perfect power, goodness, and wisdom, who is worshipped as the ruler and creator of the universe. The word, “good” has so many meanings, like “a favorable character or tendency.” It also means bountiful, suitable, and fit.
When we take a step back from life-changing situations and circumstances with these two definitions in mind—it helps frame God in the correct light instead of inside our pain. In God’s goodness, He authored every single day of Mike’s life, including how his life and last moments were woven into the fabric of our family. This meant, God knew the very hairs on Mike’s head, and He knew when Mike’s last day on this earth would be. In His goodness, He gave us the opportunity to say goodbye and let him come home to be surrounded by family before he left this world. We later learned, so many families in the middle of the pandemic did not get to say goodbye as we did. Their loved ones passed in isolation in the hospital.
In bitter moments like this, we all have a choice, focus on His goodness or become bitter. How we react to bitterness is a crucial gauge of what is going on inside of us. Are we going to God with our questions, circumstances, and situations? Or are we blaming Him? We’re reminded of King David’s appeal to the Lord, “Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Psalm 139:24). We must have this same approach when it comes to our own lives. Just because our situation or circumstances are not good doesn’t mean God isn’t. God wants us to address what is going on inside of us immediately and bring it to Him.
What ‘God Is Good’ Really Means
One good look at our situation or the news headlines makes one wonder how good God really is in face of suffering in this world. Like when there is a 100 car pile up on the interstate, extreme temperatures that leave farmers and ranchers losing calves minutes after being born. There’s child abuse, sex trafficking, cancer, unemployment, children starving around the globe, miscarriages, abortions, and all the other unimaginable ugly things in between. In our humanness, we can’t help but think, “Is God really good if He’s allowing me to go through this?”
This question reveals something pivotal. It reveals the lack of trust in our souls. It reveals how we are flawed and weak, but God’s Word says He is good. Jesus, who was God’s only Son told us in Luke 18:19, “No one is good—except God alone.” In John, we learn that God is light, in Him, there is no darkness at all.” This means there is no evil in God. His intentions, plans, motivations, sovereignty all point to one crucial fact: God is Good. Genesis 50:20 reveals where the lack of goodness comes from. It comes from within our flawed souls. “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”
Psalm 100:5 teaches us God’s goodness extends from His nature and through all generations, “The LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations”
God can create only what is good because He is fully good. “Every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17).
When we dig a little deeper, we find out we have flawed, we are filled with sin, and we are the ones who commit evil. There is a very real enemy out there who is doing everything he can to use our weaknesses and sin propensity against us because his time is running short. He wants to take our loneliness and pain and use it against God. But God tells us, “The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him” (Nahum 1:7). God cares for us and He wants us to trust Him in the small things, the everyday things, as well as the big things too.
