5 Meaningful Baby Shower Prayers

5 Meaningful Baby Shower Prayers

Pregnancy is a wonderful time, but it can also be a time filled with anxiety as the Mama’s body changes and hormones rage. Beyond physical presents given at a baby shower, gifts of prayer can have a huge impact. If ever there was a time when young couples need prayer, it is on the journey to parenthood. Incorporating Scripture into those prayers has a huge impact because the Holy Spirit honors scriptural prayers.

Scriptures about Childbirth and Motherhood

There are many Bible verses about giving birth and motherhood that can be woven into prayer for the new parents. One of the most beautiful stories in the Old Testament is the story of Hannah. One of two wives, Hannah’s womb was barren and the thing that Hannah ached for more than anything was to have a baby. In utter desperation, Hannah poured out her heart to the LORD. She cried out in desperation and told the LORD if He would give her a son, she would give the son back to the LORD to serve Him all the days of his life. God heard Hannah’s prayer and granted her request. When she brought him to the temple to serve Eli the priest she declared, “I prayed for this child and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him” (1 Samuel 1:27). What a beautiful example for every parent. Though we pray to the Lord, to give us children we don’t own our children, they belong to the Lord.

One of the most beautiful scriptures demonstrating God’s heart for babies in the womb is found in Psalm 139:11-13. The author, David, penned these poetic words under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” From the Psalmist we see that God is intimately acquainted with every child formed in the womb. He designed them with intentionality and ordained a life work for them. What an encouragement to young parents’ hearts, that God is intimately acquainted with their child.

Not only does God design each child with intentionality He also considers each child a blessing and someone to be treasured. In Biblical days when a woman became pregnant, the pregnancy was celebrated. Each Child considered a reward from the LORD. In our day and age, we need to remember that every child is a gift from God to be cherished. The Psalmist wrote, “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from Him” (Psalm 127:3).

As we consider these passages, here are 5 baby shower prayers to bless and celebrate both the parents and the child. You might even write out these prayers for the parents to keep and treasure.

A Baby Shower Prayer to Start the Party

Lord God, we celebrate with joy! We praise You that You saw fit to allow ______________________ (put in the name of the mom) to become pregnant. What a miracle! As You are weaving this child together in _______________________’s (name of the mom) womb, we are filled with joy and praise. Only You, God Almighty can knit a child together with intentionality according to your plan. We worship You as the Giver of Life and the Creator of this Child. As we celebrate, we know that Your presence is here with us. We give You this time of celebrating and we ask that all we say and do would honor You!

A Baby Shower Prayer for the New Parents

Holy God, we praise and thank You for ____________________ (put in the name of the parents). Thank You that You have blessed their marriage with the reward of a child. Oh, what a treasure! Thank You that this child will enjoy the love of both parents. Now, Lord God, we dedicate these parents to You. Lord Jesus, we know that fear and anxiety are a part of every parent’s journey. Help them to remember that you will be with them as they parent. When they are tired, be their rest. When they are weary, be their strength. When they are confused, be their wisdom. Lord, Your Word teaches that by wisdom a house is built and through understanding it is established, through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. Holy Spirit, we pray that wisdom would fill these parents, that understanding would abound in their relationship with their child and that their home would be filled with rare and beautiful treasures as they seek to know their child more deeply (Proverbs 24:3-4).

A Baby Shower Prayer for a Safe Delivery

Heavenly Father, we come before You and pray for a safe delivery for this tiny one. Thank You that You are our Abba Father and that You bend down to listen. We pray that the entire birth process will be surrounded by your peace. Would You place a shield of protection around the labor and delivery? Protect the hands of those who will deliver this child. We pray that You would give wisdom throughout the entire birthing process, that doctors, nurses, and midwives would know exactly what to do to protect this precious one. We pray that no weapon formed against either parent or child would prosper but that this new little one would enter the world in peace. We praise You in advance for Your protection.

A Baby Shower Prayer for Blessing Over the Baby

Lord Jesus, we bless this baby and set this tiny one apart for your glory. We thank You that You have known this child since before he/she was even conceived. We praise You and thank You for knitting this child to perfection in the womb. We pray Your blessing over this little one’s eating and sleeping. We pray for Your blessing over every developmental milestone this child reaches. We pray a blessing on this child’s learning process. We pray a blessing over their friendships and relationships. May this little one grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with both God and man. May he experience your love and salvation at a young age so that he will grow up loving Jesus and wanting to serve Him. May he experience Your presence going before him, behind him above and beneath him. May this child’s roots sink down deep into the depths of Your love. We ask You to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond all we can ask or think in this child’s life. May You use this child to lead many to your saving love. May this little one thrive in the joy of the Lord and may he experience Your peace even in the middle of life’s difficulties. We commit this child to Your almighty keeping and we praise You in advance for all that You will do through this child’s life! Amen.

A Baby Shower Prayer for the Siblings of the New Baby

Lord Jesus, You know every sibling in this family. We pray that You would prepare their hearts to welcome this new little sibling. Father, You are a tender Father and we know that often there is an adjustment period as older siblings welcome their new baby brother or sister. Holy Spirit, would you give each sibling a tender heart towards this new precious one? Would you give wisdom to both Mom and Dad for how to help older siblings not feel replaced but cherished as an integral part of the family? I pray You would give both parents wisdom for how to make each older sibling feel valued. Lord God, we pray that each member of this home would thrive in Your love. Thank You that Your hand of blessing is on this home!

Baby showers are such a special time for new parents. By praying special prayers of blessing over the shower, the parents, the delivery, the baby, and the baby’s siblings, you will give a gift to the new parents that is extraordinary.
