5 Things Christians Can Pray for This Presidential Election Season

The 2024 election year is likely one of the most volatile that America has ever experienced. The top concern of voters across party lines is the economy. Most people have been hit hard by inflation. Other top concerns that Americans have are tending to depend on party affiliation, according to Pew Research Center

As of today, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are running close races. However, the most recent Rasmussen Reports poll finds that 49 percent of likely American voters would choose Trump while 47 percent would choose Harris. There are still 3 percent who are undecided, while 2 percent would prefer some other candidate. Rasmussen Reports pollster Mark Mitchell has also stated in a video that in their research, Rasmussen Reports has discovered that there are "fake polls" out there, which they claim are polls that are attempting to favor Harris.

As for the thoughts of Christian Pastors, Lifeway Research has found that most intend to vote in the 2024 election, but many pastors were hesitant to say who they would support. Of those willing to share that information, at least half said they would support Trump. Exact percentages varied from denomination to denomination.

1. Pray the Holy Spirit Will Motivate Christians to Get Out and Vote

One of the greatest blessings about living in America as an American citizen is that freedom of religion is protected. Many countries around the world don't have the pleasure to enjoy that freedom. In fact, there are many countries where those who choose to practice Christianity can be put in prison or killed. Of the pastors who said they were planning to vote for Trump, 96 percent said they were doing so because Trump has a track record of protecting religious freedom, according to FaithWire.  The pastors who voted for Harris said they were doing so because of character.

Christians aren't in the minority in America. About 64 percent of Americans identify as Christians, according to Pew Research Center. That being said, Christians can have a huge pull in the direction of an election if all of them would get out and vote. Unfortunately, not all of them do. As of 2022, it was estimated that about two-thirds of Christians vote, according to MyFaithVotes. A more recent estimate was released in the movie God's Not Dead: One Nation Under God. That estimate notes that 40 million Christians don't vote, and 15 million aren't even registered. Those numbers were also captured in an interview between TBN and David White. White stars as Reverend David Hill in the movie.

Another concept to consider regarding voting is stewardship. According to McFarland Ministries, voting is one of the best ways Christians can influence the direction of the country, its laws, leaders, and culture.

2. Pray for Election Integrity

One of the biggest issues of contention in the previous election was election integrity. Though there may be arguments that elections are rigged, God can reveal and overcome any election interference and dishonesty, especially when His people pray. There are efforts to boost election integrity, and a bill was introduced in the House last year about this particular topic. Certainly this is something to keep in prayer, as well as the bill's cosponsors and the rest of our nation's leaders.

3. Pray for Protection for All Poll Workers, Voters, and Others at Polling Locations

Many polling locations across the country are anticipating possible threats on Election Day. So efforts are being made to bring poll workers and law enforcement together for the purpose of ensuring everyone's safety, according to ABC News. Christians can ask the Lord to extend His protection around poll workers, law enforcement, voters, and all in leadership during early voting and on Election Day.

4. Pray That the Lord's Will Would Be Done Regarding Which Candidate Is Chosen

The Lord can extend His mercy and grace to an entire nation if He chooses. When Jonah told the Ninevites that they would be destroyed in 40 days, they fasted, prayed, and repented, and then the Lord decided not to destroy them (Jonah 3:4-10).

Daniel 4:17 states that the Lord rules even in "the kingdom of men" and that He chooses whoever He pleases to rule the nations of the earth. At the same time, when the apostles asked Jesus to teach them to pray, one of the things He told them to include in their prayers was, "...Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven..." (Luke 11:2).

5. Pray for a Peaceful Transition of Power

Two-thirds of Americans have expressed fear that violence will erupt over the outcome of Election Day, according to Reuters. However, the Bible makes it clear that when God's people pray, God will bring His peace and protection into the midst of volatile circumstances (Phil. 4:6-7; John 14:27; Psalm 91; Isaiah 54:17). God isn't the author of confusion or chaos. Just as He's able to command the wind and waves in a storm to be at peace and be still (Mark 4:35-41), He's also able to orchestrate the peaceful transition of power in America.
