'Deadpool & Wolverine' Movie Faces Backlash for Mocking Jesus

Marvel's newest superhero film, Deadpool & Wolverine, was released over the weekend, and many moviegoers may suggest it's aimed more at adults than kids. Though the movie is dubbed as an action-adventure, comedy, and sci-fi/fantasy, it also has an "R" rating, and Christians find the movie's content to be more offensive than entertaining.

The Christian Post highlights various social media influencers who refer to the film as "a mockery" of Jesus or flat-out "blasphemous." 

One influencer who goes by MJ said in a video she posted on YouTube that she has always loved Marvel and didn't think the movie would be especially bad. However, after seeing the film, she concluded, "I have never seen Marvel go this far in mocking Jesus. I don't think I've ever even seen Marvel really mock Jesus [in the past], keeping in mind that a lot of Marvel that I've seen, I watched before I became born again in Christ. Now that I'm Christian, if I go back and watch Marvel, I would probably see things that I didn't before."

She said she was heartbroken that "during the film, Ryan Reynolds calls himself 'the messiah,' he calls himself 'marvel Jesus' throughout the film."

She also expressed deep disappointment regarding a scene in which "Hugh Jackman is crucified on a cross, obviously mocking Jesus' sacrifice for us, every single one of us, including you, on the cross, and His torment and torture and suffering on the cross. They mock it... There is blood everywhere, all over a floor and a sea of skulls. They're even mocking the blood [of Jesus]."

At the end of the film, she says that Ryan Reynolds "uses Scripture about Jesus being resurrected, and he says he is risen, referring to himself, Ryan Reynolds."

She said she was deeply hurt that Marvel would think that making a film like this "was okay" and suggested that Christians should avoid this film in protest of how Marvel mocked Jesus.


In a video shared on X that was taken from a TikTok account bearing the handle @chibimallo, a woman said that they left about 25 - 30 minutes into the movie because it was "disgusting, it is so against the Lord, they are blaspheming our Creator. You should not see it!"

X user Sabrina Smolders said her son wanted to see the movie. She found the humor to be "gross (with a little blasphemy thrown in), and the fourth wall stuff was cringe. Woke garbage."

A movie review from Focus on the Family's Pluggedin gives a detailed breakdown of the movie's content and also includes a podcast on the website, which notes that the movie is different from Marvel's PG 13 movies because" this one overflows with graphic 'R' rated content, violence is gruesome, vulgar language is constant, and serious suggestive jokes fill the script."

Pluggedin rated the movie a 0.5 out of 5 for family friendliness.
