Jason Wilson’s Bold Call for Men to Lead with Strength, Faith, and Wisdom

Jason Wilson is known to many as the man to go to when it comes to understanding and walking men through the seasons of life. Wilson is the best-selling author of a new book titled The Man, the Moment Demands. When Wilson isn't writing or speaking on men's issues, one can find him in Detroit, Michigan, teaching kids how to perform well through his transformational academy, Cave of Adullam. Wilson opens up and sets the record straight on why men must meet the demands around them, which he believes can only be done through Christ.

Crosswalk Headlines: Where did the idea of the book come from?
Jason Wilson: I have always learned that the best teacher is your life. I figured out real quickly that the students I observed learned more about what we do than what we say. The book is born out of what I have learned and experienced as a man of faith who follows the Messiah.

CWH: In the book, you mentioned the earthquake of emotions. Can you please explain that?
JW: I had to create something that's simple for men to grasp and run with it. There are a lot of other models out there. I wanted men to see something that reflected what they were going through. I created the earthquake of emotions so that we can identify first what our surface emotions as men are and what we tend to draw upon. If men can understand where their anger is coming from, they can deal with other issues.

CWH: Many men struggle with being disciplined; what advice do you have for them?
JW: Many men tell me that they're not disciplined, which isn't correct, considering that many men go to work every day. I try to have everything in order, and I have what I call a daily check-in list of what I need to knock off. However, I always leave room for the most high to lead me through that day. Having the check-off list eliminates the disappointment at the end of the day when I can't let go of the day and welcome tomorrow.

CWH: You mention in the book, the importance of your mother and what you learned about rest.
JW: My mother, who had developed dementia in 2010; I cared for her until the Lord called her home. Yeah. I was only a masculine male, and everything I did was either I was providing, or I was protecting. I never allowed myself to rest; I looked at taking a nap as a weakness. I was at the doorstep of a heart attack in 2016 because of the stress and the deep sadness of watching my mother deteriorate before my eyes and not eating correctly. My holistic doctor said to me, who is also a pastor, I want you to rest so much during these next five months that even when you read in your Bible, I want you to turn the pages slowly. I learned to rest and take the sabbath.

CWH: You talk about the importance of going to therapy. When is it time for men to go to therapy?
JW: When you catch yourself just randomly cursing or, you lack patience with your children and your wife, or you have a moment where you just cry, you don't know why, instead of just pushing it away and trying to man up, I'll often say open up. And those are the times when we need to find someone who could be an active listener, but also someone who could be a great counselor. The Bible says there is victory through wise counsel.
