Lee Strobel Investigates the Supernatural in Latest Book ‘Seeing the Supernatural’

Many have come to know Lee Strobel as the journalist who investigated Christianity and found Jesus along the way, then chronicled his journey through his best-selling book Case for ChristStrobel is clear that for him, Jesus changed his life, and he wants the world to know about what Christ can do in anyone's life.

"I'm an evangelist," Lee proclaims as he sat down for an interview with Crosswalk Headlines to talk about his new book Seeing the Supernatural, where he examines and lays out how God can and will use supernatural experiences to show his glory to us.

Crosswalk Headlines: Where does your passion for writing come from?
Lee Strobel: I'm an evangelist at heart. I want to see people come to faith in Jesus; I want to see their lives changed. God has redeemed my training, which was in journalism and investigations. God has taken those skill sets that, in many ways, were used for evil at the time when I was an atheist and has redeemed those for good to spread his message of hope, grace, love, redemption, and eternal life. My writing is really driven by a desire to see lives transformed and eternities rewritten.

CWH: Was it hard to write about the importance of the supernatural?
LS: The way I approached it was that I wanted to see what evidence there really is beyond that which we can see and touch. That's kind of consistent with the way I approach everything in my nature and my DNA. I really wanted to look at everything from mystical dreams to near-death experiences, deathbed visions, and direct experiences with God, and all these phenomena.

CWH: What gave you the evidence that the title was worth investigating?
LS: The fact that about 80% of American adults believe that there is something beyond what we can see and touch tells me there's a bridge here that can be built from a biblical understanding of the world to come.

CWH: How long did it take you to write the book?
LS: It took a couple of years to develop and work on honing and seeking out experts. If I'm going to write about angels, for instance, I want to seek out a guy who's written a book on the doctrine of angels and has spent many years investigating it. I don't have to be the world's leading expert on these topics; I just need to find the world's leading experts.

CWH: Why do you think some believers don't take the issue of supernatural experiences seriously?
LS: I think Satan's greatest accomplishment has been to convince people he doesn't exist. Satan hides behind the cloak of people who don't want others to think they're weird, so they don't investigate this stuff.  I think Christians want to be respected, so they don't want to be attached to anything weird

CWH: What did you learn about angels in the process of writing the book?
LS: I've been a Christian since 1980; I don't think I've ever heard a sermon on the topic of angels. I think it's because we're Christians, and yes, we believe in Jesus. And yes, we know that Jesus believed in angels. But the truth is, there is a supernatural realm, and there are demons, and there are angels; it's changed the way I pray. We see the story in John of how he encounters an angel, and he falls to his knees because he's overwhelmed by this vision of the angel. The angel says, "Don't worship me; worship God." I want to be clear that I don't pray to angels. However, one thing I've never done that I've started doing because of researching this book is to pray to God about angels. In other words, Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, as he was being arrested, said, could I not pray to my father right now? And he will send legions of angels to protect me. So, Jesus is saying, if I wanted to, I could ask God to send an allegiance, thousands of angels right now to protect me. While writing this book and researching the supernatural, I began to pray, "God, surround me, my family, and my ministry with Your angels."
