Arizona Plane Crash Adds to Growing Concerns over U.S. Aviation Safety

Another plane crash in the United States has resulted in multiple casualties, this time at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona, where a private aircraft collided with a second plane -- apparently due to a landing gear malfunction. The latest tragedy involved a Learjet 35A that was landing when it collided with a parked Gulfstream G200 jet, killing one and injuring three, including two critically. Vince Neil, singer for the rock band Mötley Crüe, owns the Learjet but was not on board, according to a statement from a spokesperson.

The collision was captured on video.

Airport officials told the Arizona Republic that the landing gear of the Learjet 35A appeared to fail upon touchdown, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway and collide with the parked plane. Scottsdale Airport does not have commercial traffic but is popular among private and business planes.

The crash took place at 2:39 p.m. local time Monday.

“On board Mr. Neil’s plane were two pilots and two passengers,” the spokesperson said Monday. “Mr. Neil was not on the plane. More specific details about the collision are not available as this is a rapidly evolving situation, and there is an ongoing investigation. Mr. Neil’s thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved, and he is grateful for the critical aid of all first responders assisting today.”

The collision occurred amid growing concerns over airline safety in the United States. In January, two crashes in one week captured national attention -- first when an American Airlines plane collided with a military helicopter in D.C., killing all 67 on board the two craft. The second incident that same week involved an air ambulance that crashed shortly after takeoff in Philadelphia, killing all six individuals on board, including a pediatric patient, her mother, and four crew members.

Last week, a Bering Air plane crashed in Alaska, killing all 10 aboard.
