New Peanuts Special Has LGBT Message: 'Some Kids Even Have 2 Moms'

A new episode featuring the beloved Peanuts characters on Apple TV Plus breaks new ground by including a message about LGBT families.

The episode, Snoopy Presents: To Mom (And Dad), With Love, will debut on May 6, two days before Mother's Day, and spotlights Peppermint Patty's grief over the holiday. Because Peppermint Patty was raised by her father, she never celebrates it.

"My dad does all that mom's stuff for me," Peppermint Patty tells her friend Marcie.

Eventually, Peppermint Patty asks Marcie, "There are all kinds of moms, right?"

"Of course," Marcie answers. "Foster kids have terrific moms. So do adopted kids. Some kids even have two moms."

Peppermint Patty is excited by the news.

"Even kids like me – with no mom – can have someone who acts like a mom. All moms deserve to be celebrated, don't you think?"

Peppermint Patty decides to celebrate her dad for Mother's Day.

Apple TV Plus debuted the trailer on April 29. A news release calls the episode a "sweet Mother's Day celebration of friendship and family featuring the beloved Peanuts gang."

"While the other kids are excited to celebrate the special day, for Peppermint Patty, it's just a reminder that she didn't grow up with a mom," the news release said. "With her good friend Marcie by her side, she soon realizes that real families come in all shapes and sizes, and that Mother's Day is an opportunity to thank that special person in your life who means the most to you. Meanwhile, Snoopy and Woodstock embark on an epic adventure to find Woodstock's long-lost mom."

Although Peppermint Patty's decision to celebrate her dad on Mother's Day excites her, she becomes discouraged when she cannot find a Mother's Day card honoring fathers. Thus, she improvises.

"I know how to celebrate Mother's Day!" she tells Marcie. "Tomorrow, I'll spend the whole day with my dad. We'll play and talk to each other. And I'm gonna make him laugh, and he'll make me laugh. And together, we'll share the biggest laugh ever."
