Rachael Lampa Honors Son with Down Syndrome in Uplifting New Song ‘Superpowers’

Award-winning singer Rachael Lampa debuted a new song Friday celebrating her son Leo, who has Down syndrome and whom she credits with transforming the way she views the world. Her new song, Superpowers, highlights his joy and his smile, as the chorus proclaims: "Whatever they said was wrong about you; couldn't have been more wrong about you; standing up to all the doubters; you're the one with superpowers." Leo was born in October 2022.
Lampa released the new song on World Down Syndrome Day.
"I'm so honored to be able to sing a song for my son who has Down syndrome," Lampa said on Instagram, adding she is "part of something really holy and beautiful that God has offered to me and my family -- to walk with someone who has such light and such a gift to bring to the world."
"We're just going to celebrate him today," she said. "And we want to celebrate the whole Down syndrome community, everyone that surrounds those who have Down syndrome, families and siblings and friends and therapists and teachers and especially those who have Down syndrome. We just love you. We wouldn't be the same without you and your superpowers. I love you guys."
In a separate Instagram video, Lampa reflected on what she wished she had known when she learned Leo has Down syndrome. Leo, she explained, "is still the baby I've always hoped and dreamed of -- he's just a little bit more."
"Some would think he's growing and developing slower, but to us, he's exactly right -- and maybe we are the ones who move too fast in the first place," Lampa said.
Leo sees the world without "filters," she said.
"I wish I would have known that I was about to see the world and see people with more compassion, with more joy, and with the desire to make sure that all people, no matter how many chromosomes they have, that they matter," she said.
