WKU Christian Students Cover Walkways with Gospel of John in Massive Evangelism Project

A group of Christians at Western Kentucky University recently took the biblical call to spread the gospel to a new level recently, writing the entire book of John in chalk across the campus sidewalks. The initiative was the collaborative effort of three campus ministries -- Cru, Baptist Campus Ministry, and Hilltoppers for Christ -- and involved writing all 21 chapters of John’s Gospel in vibrant chalk colors across the pathways where students walk each day. According to the College Heights Herald, the project took approximately two and a half hours to complete.
About 70 students took part.
“People look for answers in a lot of different things, and I think it’s really good to have answers right in front of them,” Luke Alford, vice president for Baptist Campus Ministry and a mechanical engineering student, told the Herald.
Said Elijah Vaughn, BCM’s serve team coordinator, “I want them [the WKU community] to see Christ in all that we do.”
Each day, students use the sidewalks to travel between classes. Vaughn and others hope the verses offered them inspiration and encouragement.
Many of the verses were accompanied by artwork -- crosses, rainbows, and even a depiction of the sun rising over the clouds.
The students came together for the project on a cool evening around 9:30 p.m. on March 11 and wrapped up around midnight. They drew the verses on a popular path that extends from Grise Hall to WKU Health Services and the Raymond B. Preston Health & Activities Center, Here Bowling Green reported.
The next day, the artwork was popular among students walking the path.
“It’s my goal for the year, to get more connected with God,” freshman Ryan Cantabeni told the Herald. “It’s really nice to have some kind of sign showing me [to] keep doing this.”
“It probably took a lot of time,” junior Jenna Kittrell told the Herald. She describes herself as non-religious. “A lot of people probably don’t appreciate it enough, but I think it’s pretty, and it adds colors to the campus.”
